This Shall Come in Handy When We All Can No Longer Afford to Pay for Heat, Thank You

White_House_9

I love when our President gets sports-related swag. Usually it’s fun stuff like jerseys or speedos and such. However, Team U.S.A.’s (both Olympic and Paralympic) recent visit to the White House was a little disappointing in this scope, as all Bush and the First Lady got were some jackets and an American flag that was flown in Beijing during the games. Snooze. Would have loved to see Phelps give him a his very own Razor, but from the looks of it, Bush seems to be thinking the same thing about dolphin boy that the rest of us are these days — “You’re kind of douchey.”

Also, best sunglasses in the crowd go to the guy at the top of this pic.

Have a glorious day everyone, and if you’re anywhere in the vicinity of Madison tonight, make sure to head over to catch Paul on his rock tour of middle America. Tickets available here. —Vince

So I’m loving the classic-uni matchup of Texas vs. Oklahoma, but … they enclosed the Cotton Bowl! I know a lot of us are members of the Stick With a Classic school, and I think it applies to stadia, too.

What was distinctive about the Cotton Bowl was its symmetry: Upper decks on the sidelines only. You’re flipping channels, you see a shot from a blimp, you know what stadium it is. Like the open end of the Orange Bowl.

Now it’s just another stadium. Sigh.

Anybody know if the Red River Shootout is moving to the Cowboys’ new cash machine palace?

Has anyone else noticed the light blue color that’s very present in the Trop during Rays games? They must be selling that color merchandise pretty well. Methinks we’ll see an alt-jersey or BP jersey of that color next year….

Yeah, but the renovations to and expansion of the Cotton Bowl are what continues to make it a relevant stadium. The Red River Shootout is supposed to remain at the Cotton Bowl through 2015 as a result – and not move to the Cowboys’ new stadium, as the Cotton Bowl Classic game itself will.

I figured that’s what it was about, scott.

That’s weird that the RRS is staying at the Cotton Bowl, but the Cotton Bowl game won’t be played there anymore. Follow the money, I suppose.

I haven’t been able to watch any of the Rays’ playoff games so far, but if any place needed a splash of color, it’s the Trop.

Terrible baseball (before this year) plus acres of gray? I can see where Central Florida has been slow to embrace the Rays.

I tried to run a search through here, so I apologize if I’m covering something that’s already been mentioned, but…

Has anyone noticed that Virginia’s football outfit has two different versions of the logo?

You can kind of see it here:

    http://news.yahoo.co...

On the ball (and on the helmet, though it’s hard to tell from that pic) is the logo they’ve had for the past several years. On the shoulder, though, the swords are straight, not curved. The normal logo appears on both the helmet and on the ball.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    To answer the Phelps question:

I met up with some (female) friends at a bar while I was in Ann Arbor. They had just turned 21 and were celebrating. On my way I got a call from one of the girls saying that there was this drunk guy and his friends shamelessly hitting on them and not leaving them alone. So I pull up to the bar and they are outside and I see that Michael Phelps is the drunk guy trying to get them to go home with him.

I ask them if they wan’t a ride somewhere else and the 4 of them get into my car. Phelps goes berserk. He starts screaming at me, saying that he will “Fuck me up” (which he could, natch) and how I was being a cock block. After we left they told me he was just all over them and asking if he paid them money would they come back to his place with his friends.

Basically it could have just been his drunk state (we’ve all been there) but by the sounds of it he just does whatever he wants since he thinks he is hot shit. Whatever.

I was out today, doing a bit of “odds and ends” shopping, and I happened to wander through an older bookstore that really doesn’t get a lot of traffic.

Now, being a hockey guy, I was disappointed to find a distinct lack of hockey books. However, I did find a book that would be right up Paul’s alley, specifically due to its amazing photography.

Ballparks: Yesterday and Today is an amazing book. 448 pages of history of stadiums in every relevant MLB city. The book weighs 5.2 lbs! I picked it up for less than $20, but the history in this book alone is worth way more.

    It’s a must-have for any baseball fan.

Cornell (vs. Harvard today) had shoulder loops that actually were shoulder loops, not some truncated, squared off stripe pattern that says, “We USED TO have shoulder loops.”

    Looked great. Good for them.

And, yes, Texas and Oklahoma looked great. Not a bit of “black for the hell of it”. Amazing they could be any good, or the game could be any fun to watch, since obviously neither team understands that in order to play football you have to dress like thugs…er, um, video game manly men.

Smaller college games usually have some “generic” ball persons without any team identification but larger college games will have them in team attire for quicker identification by the officials.

Each team has a “spare” ball on each sideline. When a ball goes out of bounds or becomes dead outside the numbers, the ball boy (of the team in possession) will give the new ball to the official for spotting at the hash and then retreive the old ball (notice there’s never a delay in waiting for a game ball in college games).

So there are actually 3 game balls for each team. For the team in possession, it’s the ball in the game plus the spare on each side. For the team not in possession, the ball person on the press box (non chains) side has two balls. Balls on any change of possession go in and out on that side.

  • Mark K | October 11, 2008 at 7:36 pm |

Oh and yes- each team will have their own brand of ball that they use all the time in practice and games. The visitors can choose to use the home team’s balls if they wish- they rarely will.

Also- there is no “kicking” ball as the ball in play on kick downs will be a random one from the 3 in use.

The officials check the balls before the game and maintain control of the balls throughout. They test for pressure and add air if necessary prior to the game. They’re almost always low.

Actually, most schools use student managers to do the ball work.

And they use three balls per sideline, minimum. There are usually 8-12 balls per team total. Not three.

Is it me, or are the gold on Mizzou’s uni numbers and the gold on Mizzou’s pants not the same gold?

On a tangentially related note, the whole thing about different players wearing #25 to honor a kid who died in 2005 is pretty stupid. Yes, I know this year would have been his senior season. Still.

  • Doug | October 11, 2008 at 8:09 pm |

    A) A dude who won 8 gold medals in a single Olympic Games?

    or

    B) A dude sitting alone on his computer calling Phelps a d-bag?

Sorry, guys. Not even close. STFU[/quote]
Since you ended your post with a hearty STFU, I’m going to have to school you. The problem with your logic is that I can say who’s the biggest douchebag though:
    A) A dude who won 8 gold medals in a single Olympic Games?

    or

    B) A dude sitting alone on his computer calling Phelps a d-bag?

    or

Now by your logic you are a douchebag too. So maybe you should STFU? Or just not end sentences by telling large groups of people to do the same?

    How clutch is Evan Longoria?

Which reminds me. How hot is Eva Longoria?

Anytime I can see clutch homeruns, and have them remind me of Eva Longoria…well, that is what you call a “win-win situation”.

yeah, that’s bugged me since they introduced the new unis a few years ago. the pants are more of a yellow but the jersey numbers are gold. it really looks bad during day games.

on another note, it looks like Mizzou is taking steps toward correcting their lighting problems. it still seems pretty dark (flip over to the LSU/Florida game for comparison) but it’s at little better than it’s been recently. they also seem to have different lights on the camera side of the field than they do on the other. when you see a reverse angle on a replay, the whites have a slight blue tint to them. kinda like those high intensity headlight are shining on them. this has bothered me for a couple seasons now.

    re: Micheal Phelps.

Not saying anything about Phelps here, but based on personal experience the best of the best either are incredibly nice, classy people or incredible douche bags. Doesn’t seem to be much middle ground.

Athletic excellence should never be assumed to make someone a sterling human being. Ever.

One reasonable indicator (but not the only one, to be sure) of Phelps personality: How’s his dating life these days? Compared to, say, someone like Lance Armstrong. Or Tony Romo, for that matter?

Just sayin’, you’d think he’d have some incredible women wanting to spend time with him these days, that’s all.

All of the animated guys, in those mock-ups and on uni-sites, look like Jeff Conine. I guess you’d call him “The Prototype”?

I kinda like the idea of that light blue being used more..and like I said, it looks like it’s trending that way. I do however, wish they’d stay away from over-cheesifying the uni by adding an alternate cap. The regular cap with the subtle light blue outlining the “TB”, would look great with a light blue shirt…imo.
