Manny And Joe: Posse

Hi hat? Hells yes. East Coast swagga? Hells yes. Wait, is Manny wearing a rosary on his wrist? Can anybody more in tune with Catholicism help us out?

Switching gears entirely, I knew Colorado’s new uniforms were light, and they had that strange bumpy stuff on the shoulders and all. I had no idea they helped cancel the laws of physics. — Bryan

Hmm, I guess I’m one who finds “mound art” sort of distracting (though that is a cool aerial photo). I guess it wasn’t enough for the Brewers to only have ads behind home plate.

Look past the garishness of the Cal Bear’s leg swishes/suspenders-hangin’-down look and check out the helmet logo on the neck thingie of the ASU player.

I can’t recall seeing a player wear a helmet sticker on any other part of their uniform/equipment before, especially a sticker that large.

Well, the rosary is becoming a little controversial lately. See this: link (or any of the other dozen or so articles highlighting this new symbol.

Allegedly, gangs are using these as identifiers. Watch for them in the New York Mets clubhouse since Jerry Manuel and, now, Johan Santana, are “gangsta”.

Speaking of mount art, how often did the Shea mound have the interlocking NY this season? I noticed it in the second game of the Mets-Cubs series a couple weeks ago, but not in games 1 and 3. I didn’t watch game 4.

Perhaps this has been discussed in detail here already. If so, I completely missed it.

I don’t mind the mound art at all. Let the groundskeepers get some glory. Its more subtle than a huge logo mown into the outfield grass, at least.

It’s a little hard to see on Manny, but Catholics who “wear” real link usually slip them over their head, instead of carrying their rosary in a pocket or purse.

Reminds me of the story of a batter crossing himself before stepping into the batter’s box… at which point, the pitcher called time and crossed himself… and then said, “Now we’re even with God; let’s see who’s the better man!

Do you just mean the ads on the back wall of the home plate in Miller Park? Otherwise when did you ads behind home plate?

I really don’t mind any mound art as long as it isn’t advertising. It is just the team’s logo… what’s so bad about that?

Quick question I’m SURE will be answered today – has Auburn worn white socks/shoes all year, or was yesterday the 1st time? Looked odd after they’ve been black socks/shoes last few years. And Tulsa still looks like shit.

It’s tough to see if it’s a rosary or not. It kinda looks to raggedy to be one though.

My understanding is the Catholic Church frowns on wearing the rosary as jewelry. It is intended to pray with, not to decorate and glorify yourself.

    Anywho, off to church!

I guess I’m the only one that never noticed Joe Torre’s high hat until it was pointed out on Uni Watch. Now that I know about it, I still never notice it until Uni Watch keeps reminding me.
As the Brewers get more and more national air time, I think they must collectively have the baggiest unis in the majors. I’m not exactly sure where the line is between uniforms and pajamas, but the Brew Crew definitely crossed it.

I think Manny’s bracelet is made of chicken bones inscribed with WWMBMD? “What Would Manny Being Manny Do?”
I think Manny’s bracelet is made of chicken bones inscribed with WWMBMD? “What Would Manny Being Manny Do?”
it says: JILHVMBHNHWC

At first glance last night, I thought Colorado and Vanderbilt were indistinguishable. Well except for the helmet logo of course.

    going to look for pics.

I agree about the Brew Crew – they have to have the baggiest unis in baseball. Even Manny’s Dodger duds have trimmed up a bit from his BoSox days.

The mound artwork is a pretty cool detail to add, however, I really think that they should stick to logos. When the “brewers.com” started showing up it looked like a cheap plug for the ticket office. The glove/ball and “M” logo look cool. Now if the grounds crew in Miller Park could only get the grass to keep growing. link

I just want to know what size the jerseys are that Prince Fielder and CC Sabathia wear. Those things look like they’d be baggy on offensive tackles wearing full pads.

I think the only other 6-syllable word on here has been Saltalamacchia. OK, Indianapolis too.

Although in recovery now, I grew up Catholic; wearing a rosary as jewelry was more than frowned upon. It just wasn’t done. It may not qualify as “send you to hell” wrong, but it was certainly up to “get smacked around by a nun (or brother if you went to Jesuit school)” wrong.

BTW – Cubs wore b.p. jerseys again for game 3, instead of proper uniforms. As much as I wanted Dodgers to go down, Cubbies deserved to lose for that. When you haven’t won squat for 100 years, you show a little respect to the baseball gods.

Hey LI Phil I know the Seahawks played a road game at Jacksonville in Septembet 2005 where the Jags wore white at home, and the ‘hawks went with the greyge tops and white pants.

Plus there was a commercial a while back with Matt Hasselback where he wore a white top and greyge pants. So they have worn those combos, albeit very rarely.

I know the diamondbacks (also in a retractable roof stadium) have what look like stadium lights on wheels that they put in the corner, and it seems to work fine.

UT Martin Skyhawks wore orange jerseys for the first time since Nov. 16, 2002, against Murray State. They duped the Auburn look obvioulsy (one of my fave college uni sets), funny when you realize that in the 70\’s they changed their nickname from the Volunteers to Pacers because they got tired of being referred to as the Baby Vols. They dumped the Pacer name for the Skyhawk mascot about 10 years ago.

I was watching the Dolphins/Chargers game, and I noticed that Ronnie Brown doesn’t wear gloves- which I thought was pretty unique…then I looked closer and it looked like he had something orange covering his thumbs only. I haven’t got a close look at it yet, but I think he is wearing regular gloves with all 4 fingers cut out…pretty odd to say the least.

The Titans are wearing the same uniform for the 5th straight week. That’s odd considering they aren’t like the Cowboys and Redskins and wear white at home which would make it more common.

Dude had his leg amputated and is paralyzed from the waist down. He will never play a down of football again. I figured the team would do something for him, if nothing else but a helmet decal. He’s in no way, shape or form anything close to Sean Taylor status, but his situation sucks. I thought it would have been a nice gesture for Jacksonville to honor him in some way.
Did Buffalo do any sort of tribute to Kevin Everett last year? I can’t remember. Cause he’ll never play again.

It looks like James from Jacksonville has an upside-down W on his nameplate instead of an M.

Anyone else think the “LA” on the left sleeve of the Dodgers jersey is a bit much? I think it looks very weird. It would be like the Yankee jersey having an “NY” on the left sleeve.

For such a classic look, there are def. a few flaws (I know Paul worked on those a while back), but I think the “LA” on the left sleeve is at the top of my list. That, and the red on the front. WHY IS IT RED!?! Such a classic jersey that’s driving me nuts.

‘specially since they don’t play in LA

that would be like the giants or jets having NY on their helmets and not playing in NY

HOLY SHIT…im so sorry…im watching the angels sox and thinking you’re talking about the ANGELS…

this is what happens when you spend half the weekend at the hospital…

    carry on

you did say “DODGERS” not “ANGELS”

Anyone recall that alternate football league that was supposed to get off the ground, this year I think? I want to say it was called the AAFL or something. What’s the progress of that? As I recall, none of the teams had logos or even names. BTW, did the Detroit Lions ever do a memorial for Mike Utley? He was paralyzed in-game around 1991-92.

It was called the AAFL. The All-American Football League. They had a draft and had stadium contracts and all of that, but the league fell through financially. They are still around, but haven’t played a game. I think they’re hoping to eventually gather the fan support and get the season underway. The teams were just state names with no mascots, i.e. “Team Arkansas”, “Team Michigan”, “Team Tennessee”, etc. The logos are really lame, which leads me to believe the uniforms were probably even worse.

Anyone else think that Craig Sager goes shopping for his suits at Michael Irvin’s yard sales? Those suits are hideous, but I always want to see what he’s wearing so that I can get a good laugh.

Just for the record……2 days ago Sager was wearing a Salmon pink suit, and yesterday it was lime green. Unreal.

Hahaha…no problem, Phil. It’s been a long weekend for all of us!

Same thing with the Pats, they’ve worn white every game this week, and will be next week in SD. It makes me think that they are afriad to wear the blue unis after what happened in the Super Bowl.
The Titans are wearing the same uniform for the 5th straight week. That’s odd considering they aren’t like the Cowboys and Redskins and wear white at home which would make it more common.
Bryan,

I left a comment last week about how I thought the weekend entries were always negative. I take it back – great job this weekend. Sorry for being an idiot

anyone know what’s up with Mike Napoli’s jersey? It’s unbuttoned and the top is tucked under itself. Someone I’m with tells me he does this all the time and it never moves, as if it’s velcroed or something. I did a GIS and found no evidence. Anyone?

jeff already touched on it, but you don’t memorialize someone who’s living…not that what happened to him doesn’t suck, but he is still alive at least

nothing goodfornothingell does remotely resembles the rozelle-tags eras tho…so anything is possible…even that ‘brady sticker’ joke got some people
You can memorialize somebody who’s not dead though, but it might not happen here. Remember the Red Wings and Konstantanov- the believe patch they wore after he was paralyzed from the waist down in a car accident (along with another teammate, Sergei Mnatsakanov)

But if he has a chance of recovering and being able to play again, I don’t see them doing anything.
Didn’t realize he was. Guess I didn’t read the article close enough. That sucks.
Found pictures…

Ronnie Brown early in the game with gloves on:

The guys who weren’t suited up wore T-shirts with his name and number on the back the next week (in Pittsburgh).

The front number has been red since 1952:

Why red? I dunno, ask Walter O’Malley (*spit*).

The “LA” on the sleeve is the first alteration to the home uni since the “LA” replaced the “B” on the cap in 1958.

It seems to me the Dodgers originally added those red numbers for some spring training purpose. Don’t know if it had to do with ID’ing guys from the front because so many unfamiliar faces at Vero Beach, or what.

Also have vague recollection of color spring training photo showing players with a large red “A” or “B” (or even a “C”?) at that spot on front of uni…so perhaps that’s where it began.

    Just don’t remember.

I love the red numbers on the front of the Dodgers jerseys. I don’t see that as a flaw in any way. I could, though, do without the LA patch on the sleeve.

Nothing. Okkonen notes only that they were red, and that it was the first appearance of players’ numbers on the front of the jersey.

Or maybe it was just incorporating the red from the Dodgers logo.

Pee Wee Reese in red sleeves (spring training photo, of course; guy sliding is another Dodger).
