Jocks? Check! Frocks? Sigh … check.

oakland

Oakland (Mich.) knocked off No. 23 Oregon on Saturday night, which in itself isn’t a huge deal. Nebraska beat Oregon last weekend, and Nebraska is not so good.

It was, however, interesting that Oregon, which gets the “best” Nike has to offer in other sports, is not a System of Dress team. Oakland, somehow, is. Whatever gets you through the night, I guess.

And with that, I’m out for a few days. Travel safe if you’re hitting the road or the skies. See you in a few days. And be nice to Paul while I’m gone. — Bryan

I am surprised that Carolina doned their powder blue uniforms. I expected them to wear white to force the Cowboys to have go with their “unlucky” blue uniforms. I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas!

I’m surprised Oakland doesn’t have a mix-and-match system of dress. For a big game like that, I would expected the white shirts/gold shorts or the Wizard-equse gold shirts/black short combo.

Another indication that the Vikings weren’t completely on-board with the all-purple look of the Bears game: this, from the St. Paul Pioneer-Press:

    Charley Walters column

Before the Chicago Bears game last week, Vikings players were asked whether they approved of the team’s new all-purple pants and jersey “grape” look. Linebacker Ben Leber was among those who raised his hand in disapproval.

Is it just me, or does Mr Jones from Oakland have something written underneath his jersey on the back? It may just be a shadow.

Also, there must be some sort of NCAA rule that the uniform has to fit somewhere ‘remotely’ near to the waist. Mr Jones’ waist band isn’t actually touching his body when he jumps.

[In 1999, the Atlanta Falcons hired] Jerry Glanville, whose eccentric personality gave the Falcons another piece of identity. Coinciding with Glanville’s hiring and his “Man in black” image, the Falcons altered their uniforms from their traditional red jersey/red helmet uniform to an all-black motif which would remain in place until 2003.

That picture doesn’t really capture how bad the OU jerseys are. Because of the name being under the number, the numbers are about the size of a normal team’s front numbers, and they appear to be between the players’ shoulder blades.

John Madden just talked about the black junk on the front of Adrian Peterson’s jersey as an indication of how many times he’s been tackled tonight. If only Mr. Madden read UniWatch and knew that AP has black junk on his shirt at the benning of the game …

    Regarding Adrian Peterson’s jersey gunk.

It’s been on there for a while so I think it’s glue that came of the packaging and it gathed various junk quite quickly. This happened with my authentic Adelious(sp??) Thomas jersey. A small bit of glue is on the back number 6 and it picked up a lot of crap but it’s so small it’s barely noticeable. I might post a pic later.

    Just a guess.

I wonder what the odds are that one of those over field suspended cameras will one day fall and bonk a player. I guess it’s usually behind that action so probably not high, but man; that’d be funny.

This isn’t uni-related…but it has come very close to hitting someone due to a malfunction during a seahawks game it almost hit hasselbeck…and ended up being moved off the field and hung (for a while) very low over the teams bench. Of course, all the players decided to give it plenty of space…

I just noticed Dany Heatley is now wearing what appears to be an Easton helmet [link] I didn’t even know Easton had plans to manufacture one.

Also, Brad Boyes’ Mission gloves do not match his uniform very well. [link]

Just came out this year…players started wearing them about 4-6 weeks ago.

Those Lids are brutal looking, they look like the Nike “Mario Lemiuex Bicycle helmets” from the laste 90’s.

What the hell happened to the Blues unis??? EDG?

Sorry I forgot to mention I’ve washed it many times and it still won’t come off.

I’m a current Oakland University student and must say with the skin tight jerseys the basketball team has been wearing this year, I’m very grateful that their 300 lbs center on last seasons’ team graduated. I’m glad I don’t get to see every roll on his body.

  • schuby | December 23, 2007 at 11:25 pm |

I heard that in the 1994 Orange Bowl, some Nebraska D-linemen had “Fat Nasty” printed in the midsection of their jerseys. Can anyone confirm this?

  • jeff | December 23, 2007 at 11:28 pm |

Does anyone remember this? I can’t find any pics but it was awesome!

MASKED MAN: Quarterback Trent Dilfer said he will continue to use the two-bar facemask he received from Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw.

“I just wanted to wear an old facemask and Terry was kind enough to let me wear his from Super Bowl X,” Dilfer said.

Coach Tony Dungy said he was undecided if Dilfer performed better wearing the facemask of his former Steelers teammate.

“The jury’s still out, I guess,” Dungy said.

Sorry…it happend on Nov. 15th 1998 in a Sunday night game. Paul…Can you get pics?

System of Dress is like the Oregon diamond plate football unis: they look at least decent on players with a typical athletic body (QB’s, receivers, point guards) but downright autrocious on anyone with bulk.

  • JOKSTRP | December 23, 2007 at 11:47 pm |

As for the Peterson gunk, as an ex-equiment guy, I think there is a good chance that it is from the balls. When a football is fairly new, the leather can stain. You can see that his jersey is taped to his pads and is VERY tight…so I would guess as he runs with the ball over the white twill on his numbers, the leather is staining the twill.

  • Ryan | December 24, 2007 at 12:33 am |

Haven’t seen it mentioned yet, but Adrian Peterson was one of several Bears who’s wishbone “C” helmet decal ripped… Or broke… Or whatever that would be called… There was a good shot of it right after he ran for his TD at the end of the 2nd half when he was on the sideline, if anybody is bored enough to get a screen-grab of it

Jerry Glanville LOVES black, everywhere he’s coached the first thing he did was change their uni’s to black, from the Falcons, to Portland St.
Lost the screenshot (stupid TiVo!), but Tavares Jackson is wearing a red-white-and-blue mouthguard.

If anyone is recording the game, there’s a good shot just after the massively failed screen pass to Chester Taylor on 2nd and about 12 on the Vikes first drive after Cooley’s touchdown, towards the end of the first quarter (score 9-0 at the time).
Tjack has used that mouth guard all season…he often forgets to put it in.

Did anybody notice in the Oakland photo that number 23’s shorts don’t fit very well? The elastic on the shorts aren’t even in contact with his body. That can’t be good.

How about that the new Grizz mascot was wearing Shawn’s gold #50 jersey with the name taped over at the start of the season?
