New Boombang Won’t Look So isoBLOXy

boombang 550

By Phil Hecken

In a story you may have seen yesterday on ESPN, William Weinbaum reported that MLB and the MLB Players Association have come together with a plan to introduce new protective headgear for pitchers, developed by “Boombang.” Weinbaum has been reporting on this since 2014, when he noted “MLB and MLB Players Association officials told ‘Outside the Lines’ they have been engaged for months in an unannounced jointly funded initiative with Boombang, a California-based engineering, research and consulting company, in an effort to advance the development of protective headgear for pitchers.”

Described by Patrick Houlihan (MLB Vice President) as “A hybrid of a cap and a helmet,” the new protective device is expected to weigh between 10 and 12 ounces, and will be given to approximately 20 pitchers for (possible) use during Spring Training. They will “have a carbon fiber shell and roughly resemble sun visors with extended forehead and temple coverage and single earflaps like batting helmets,” he adds. Boombang and MLB/MLBPA began the joint initiative in May of 2014 and have worked since then to come up with greater head protection for pitchers, and worked with them to get their input.

Here’s some shots of the new headgear:

Obviously, when viewed atop a mannequin head, the new hybrid helmet/cap looks pretty unweildy — not unlike the previous protective wear worn most auspiciously by Alex Torres (with the Padres in 2014 and Mets in 2015) — which is known as “isoBLOX” and which will still be an option for pitchers should they choose to wear it this year. When Torres wore it with the Padres in 2014, the device was worn inside the cap, producing a comically oversized appearance:

When Torres pitched for the Mets in 2015, the “next generation” isoBLOX became more of a wrap, worn outside the cap:

A good comparison of 2014 vs. 2015 can be seen here:

AT6

The biggest problem with isoBLOX? It looks goofy as hell. If you’re interested, Paul covered Alex Torres’ headwear travails in 2014 and again last year on the mothership. That second article also contains a great history of headgear in baseball.

So, it appears the new capmet (we need a term for this hybrid cap/helmet, right?) is not only an attempt at protecting the noggins of pitchers, but also an attempt to make it less dopey looking. If you look at the splash photo, it looks pretty cool, but when you look at it atop a mannequin, I’m not so sure it will look any better (or worse) than the original isoBLOX. Still, anything that can protect pitchers from line drives is a good thing, and hopefully some of the 20 select pitchers will choose to wear one in Spring Training.

It’s worth noting that this is (for once) a project designed specifically with player safety in mind, “This is a loss leader to address player safety, not a money-making venture,” explained Houlihan. “It’s an unprecedented collaboration between us and the union to design safety equipment from scratch, and Boombang had no restrictions on materials or design.” Good thing they weren’t planning on marketing these as fashion caps — although if they do somehow happen to catch on, it would be great if they were available to colleges/minor leaguers for their protection.

Another thing you may notice about the capmets — they have single side earflaps like batting helmets! Boombang actually designed the headwear to be specific to right-handed and left-handed pitchers “after research showed pitchers who got hit by liners typically were hit on their arm side.” There’s a full flap on one side and what appears to be half (or partial) flap covering the other ear:

Boombang flaps

Bravo to MLB and the Players Association for moving forward with this. I’m skeptical whether this will see any kind of widespread (or any?) use, but at least the option is now available, in addition to the isoBLOX. What will be more interesting to see is whether the capmets will need to be painted in various team colors and iterations, as was the case with the isoBLOX (remember Alex Torrez had at least three different wraps, including a tan wrap that didn’t quite match the camo cap the Mets wore last season). Fortunately, they won’t have that problem this season, as the camo caps & tops are gone (and Torres is on the Braves now — hopefully he secures a roster spot with them). For the sake of seeing the capmet in action though, I hope he does play in Spring Training and make a big league club (if not the Braves) in 2016. Of course, with 20 select pitchers (MLB didn’t specify who will be getting them) chosen to try the capmets, there’s a good chance at least someone will give it a shot this spring. And, unlike the isoBLOX, the new capmet offers at least some ear protection too.

So, what say you, readers? Obviously, from a uni watching perspective, it’s a good thing — and from a safety one as well. But how do you think it will look and will anyone want to actually wear one? Should MLB encourage its use and work to provide these to minor leaguers and possibly other leagues and colleges as well? Fire away.

Breaking NBA Uni News

Thanks to UW friend Conrad Burry, we have some breaking NBA uni news for the 2016-17 season (the final season before Nike takes over the apparel deal):

and

Judging from those stylesheets, it looks like the Piston, Kings and Jazz will get new logos/unis next season — and it looks like several teams (judging by the TBD demarcations) will be getting new uniforms (Pistons, Jazz & Kings) or alternates (Heat, Magic, Nets, Raptors, Wizards and Warriors). Stay tuned!

Finally — could this be the new Pistons primary logo?

UW Friday Flashback

UW’s Friday Flashback

In case you missed it, Paul’s Friday Flashback on ESPN gave us a very in-depth look at the history of the NBA’s All-Star game unis, which for many years didn’t actually suck (although I happen to think this year’s unis aren’t terrible…Kia ad patch aside). Particularly awesome were the many years when the East and West would wear jerseys resembling those of the host team’s uni (the mostest awesome of which was undoubtedly the Warriors’-based 1967 All Star game unis).

Great read, so be sure to check it out if you missed it!

Enjoy!

T-Shirt Club reminder: Paul here. In case you missed it earlier this week, the first Uni Watch T-Shirt Club design of 2016 is now available for ordering. Here’s the design, including a close-up of the jock tag graphic (for all of these, you can click to enlarge):

The Uni Watch ballplayer shown on the shirt is intended to evoke a time when sports graphics and mascots were built around fun, not ferocity. And as you can see, he totally Gets Itâ„¢ when it comes to wearing his uniform, with lots of old-school details like a flapless batting helmet, one batting glove, picture-perfect stirrups, and more.

The shirt is available here. For further info on how the T-Shirt Club will work this year, click here. Thanks for your consideration.

Uni Watch News Ticker

Baseball News: Tonight at 6:00 ET, making its TV debut on the MLB Network, is a special you won’t want to miss, The First Boys of Spring, on which our pal Bruce Menard served as part of the research team! Just a thought on those MLB partial helmets, if you’re going to do this why not just do a full up single flap helmet? Maybe a lightweight Kevlar or something with a sleeker design and not as huge looking as a batting helmet. Then there is the face unprotected. What about that? Only real way to protect a pitcher is behind a screen like batting practice since pitchers get hit on the legs a lot too. That isn’t going to happen though.

“So, it appears the new capmet (we need a term for this hybrid cap/helmet, right?)”

    I’m afraid we still do.

“EMU Baseball has now released their new home and road unis, and will be unveiling their alternate on March 1st (from EMU Baseball)”

I have no idea what EMU is. I’m sure their Twitter followers do, but for these items that just quote a tweet with a school’s initials, please expand them when they’re more obscure than UCLA. Thanks.

If you actually click the link, then close the photo, it puts you on the profile which clearly says that it’s Eastern Michigan. C’mon man, it’s 2 mouse clicks.

Or, even more easily, you click the link then simply hover your cursor over their handle. link.

In other words, less time than it took Jerry to type his comment or me to make the above image.

Also, and you may not follow college football, but we’ve covered EMU (Eastern Michigan University) on UW (Uni Watch) for some time — they’ve become link (in)famous for their link field (if not their play on it).

    Phil,

    Sorry I’m so late.

You cover Central Michigan, too, but when I see CMU, my first thought is still Carnegie Mellon. Some, of course, will react differently.

My point, though, is that when I see college initials in the ticker that I don’t immediately associate with a school, it’s equivalent to “A team wore these jerseys.” In the case of new baseball uniforms for EMU, it doesn’t matter whether it’s Eastern Michigan, East Montpelier, or Elbow Macaroni – I don’t care enough to click further, just like I don’t care about the Creighton jerseys in the previous item. (That’s not to say others shouldn’t care in either case, of course.) But at least with Creighton, I know who I’m ignoring.

The Reading Royals of the ECHL are doing pink in the rink you cited. The tweet you linked has the wrong twitter handle for them.

    I’m thinking helmet + visor = helsor.
Severely doubt its future popularity, because even though I respect the right/left flap research, I think pitchers prefer a balanced symmetric feel on their heads. Might make the puck head look a bit more popular though.

The race is famous for the protest by American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the medal presentation ceremony.

A protest that Norman supported and participated in. When Carlos forgot his black gloves, Norman suggested he wear one of Smith’s. Norman borrowed the badge of a white US rower to wear on the platform.

NEWZ EALAND…man, that’s brutal. As bad as the Giants’ SAN FR ANCISCO jersey.
Reminds me…this week I saw a USF basketball game and the Dons were wearing the fantastic throwbacks with a script
    “San
    Francisco”
on them. Giants fans, how would you like a
    SAN
    FRAN CISCO
    jersey?
    Rhetorical. It would be awesome.

The Boombangs look like slightly oversize golf visors. I’ll call ’em golf hats. Or just Boombangs.

@RRHockey was supposed to be @RRoyalsHockey aka the ECHLs READING ROYALS doing the “PINK IN THE RINK thing” as Phil put it.

I was all set to enjoy that article on Chinese Super League soccer jerseys until the author started gushing about how the “sponsors” improved the jerseys.

You don’t have to be able to read Chinese to know that they don’t.

In fact, in one case what the writer thinks is advertising is just the name of the team (建業), which would make it a “sponsor” in the true sense. I can almost forgive that one.

“‘Is this new?’ asks Jim Brunetti. ‘Some sort of strap to hold the Gatorade bottle securely to the net?'”

Those were introduced a few years back. When the NHL mandated overhead video review cameras, they found that the water bottles would sometimes block their view of the puck and the goal line, so they added those holsters to keep them out of the line of sight.

ESPN did a spot this morning on Kobe’s All-Star highlights, from all games in chronological order. So, they showed had the games when the players wore their team uni’s followed by the later all-star unis.
Wish they would go back to the team unis. The all-star things were/are just awful.

Team unis for the All-Star Game will not work until the Lakers start wearing white at home. It was brutal to watch All-Star Games when the West hosted, and the Lakers would wear their Forum Gold unis.

Hopefully they are looking to encourage the protective visor at the little league and up levels. Get the young players used to it (encouraged by parents and coaches) and then it’ll be more likely in the majors later.

    High school and up, yes.
Little League should be wiffle ball to start, then tennis balls and wooden bats for the older kids.

Growing up 100 years ago I played a LOT of stickball (not the NYC version in the street, but one on a concrete playground — yes those existed — against a brick wall with a painted strike zone) and we used stickball bats and (usually) dead tennis balls. Still flew. Once (and only once) we got the genius idea to use superballs. After breaking a bat or two, rather than going back to tennis balls, we substituted metal bats. You can guess that one-time experiment ended badly.

After seeing that gorgeous firesuit Kevin Harvick is wearing, I have to think the beverage brand must pony up to sponsor Harvick’s teammate Kurt Busch, at least for a race. The resulting merchandise would sell like hotcakes to his fans.

Yes, surprisingly there are a lot of people who purchase race-used suits from their favorite drivers…a lot more than you would think.

He’s obviously talking more along the lines of jackets, t-shirts, etc…

Checked out the favorite Canucks jersey of all time link; never realized that the original “stick in rink” jersey had a V on the sleeve near the elbow.

Did anyone catch Kristen Wiig’s Broncos pants on Fallon? The rear had the blue stripe wrap around the cheeks, so to speak. Weird as they do not look like actual Broncos pants. Best view is when she is throwing the football at the end of the segment.

Pretty sure the story of Mike Ivall selling his logo to the Maplesoft Hawks was even covered on Uni Watch a couple of years back. Still, it’s something that it keeps circulating so many years later.

Looking at the graphic for next year’s NBA primary logos: are the Celtics making the alternate cloverleaf logo their primary?

The URI player with the mask is Jarvis Garrett, who suffered a fractured maxilla (upper jaw) just a couple weeks ago. He lost a tooth and has several which are still loose. During the broadcast last night, the announcers mentioned that the refereeing crew has to formally approve of his face mask before he can wear it in the game. Much respect to him for toughing it out with a broken face.

I don’t think that’s a Texas Ranger. The only Ranger in the ASG that year was Jim Kern, and he’s in the back row.

It looks like Lee Mazzilli to me. Mazzilli was definitely on the team that year; in fact he was the MVP of the game. He was a Met at the time, but I don’t see him, or for that matter anyone else, in a Mets uni in the photo. So I’m guessing that Reggie wasn’t the only guy whose uni hadn’t arrived from New York. What does everybody think? It would explain the mismatched cap, kind of….

Mazzilli was on the NL team and thus would not be in that photo…besides the fact that it isn’t him.

The bottle holder sleeve is standard on NHL goals. That shot appeared to be from college or the minor leagues.
