‘Plaid’ Is Not an Official Team Color — Yet

It’s been a weird six weeks or so for the Rays. First came the plaid blazers. Then the blazers begat plaid-brimmed cap design that somehow became anointed as the team’s BP cap. The kicker came last night, as the Rays trotted out the plaid-brimmed hats e for last night’s game against the Orioles.

There's No Service Like Wire Service, Vol. 17

Mike Hersh has been our star wire photo researcher in recent months, but he’s now facing a stiff challenge from Bruce Menard, who recently forwarded me a huge stash of sensational pics. Let’s take a look:

The Mako Mameli Files

I recently mentioned that there’s a ton of good NFL material now available on Hulu. Turns out reader Mako Mameli has busily been making screen shots from the Hulu footage for a few months now. This is the first installment in what I hope will be a running series of his captures.

Monday Morning Uni Watch

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think I’d want my team wearing an alternate jersey for their home opener, as the Dolphins did last night (additional photos here). The Cover-Up of ’73 (no, not Watergate)

Back in the ’90s I knew this guy named Spike Vrusho, who was a gifted writer and sort of a beatnik/bohemian sports nut. A devoted Pirates fan, he published a zine called Murtaugh, which featured, among other things, a hilariously scabrous Tony Millionaire comic called “Batty” and some epic poetry along the lines . . . → Read More: The Cover-Up of ’73 (no, not Watergate)

Pass the Buckle

Shortly after I arrived at yesterday’s NBA media event, Adidas exec Travis Blasingame, who I’d met two months ago at an earlier NBA event (and who happens to be a really nice guy), walked over to say hi. We chatted a bit and at some point I caught a glimpse of his belt . . . → Read More: Pass the Buckle
