Lifelines Are for Pussies

IMG_2863.JPG IMG_2861.JPG

Meet Sam Davison (top) and the aptly named Sean O’Shea, the co-winners of last night’s Mets uni quiz at Two Boots, shown posing with their respective prizes (and, in Sean’s case, his Uni Watch membership card). They scored 24 and 23 out of a possible 32 points — impressive, given how difficult the quiz was, as you’ll see in a moment.

The whole night was a blast, thanks in no small part to Mets historian/author Matt Silverman, who channeled his Shea Goodbye co-author Keith Hernandez by donning some very subtle facial hair during his presentation. Yes, that’s me in the background, doing my best to boost T-shirt sales.

Now then, the quiz — here ’tis. One point for each correct response (and if a question calls for multiple responses, you get one point for each correct answer, so the 25 questions have a total of 32 responses and therefore 32 possible points). Knock yourselves out, but remember, the contestants at Two Boots didn’t have access to the internet, and they had to answer the questions in fairly rapid-fire fashion. I trust you’ll want to duplicate their “game conditions,” right? Right.

Answers forthcoming tomorrow. And hey, Robert Marshall, be sure to let me know how you do — I’ll be curious to see if your score matches your prognostication.

1) In 1997, the Mets made a very small change to their standard blue cap. What was it?

2) In 1999, the Mets made a very small change to their skyline logo. What was it?

3) In January of 1962, Casey Stengel posed with a drawing of what the Mets’ uniform would look like for their inaugural season. But when they arrived at spring training a month later, two design elements shown in the drawing did not appear in the uniform that they actually wore. Which one of the following details was NOT in the drawing and was NOT part of the team’s original uniform concept:

    a) Striped stirrups
    b) An underlined chest logo
    c) White cleats

4) Who is the only player ever to hit a game-winning home run in the All-Star Game while wearing a Mets batting helmet?

5) Juan Pierre is the only current big leaguer to wear his cap under his batting helmet. Who was the last Met to do so?

6) Which current Met routinely wears his pants down to his shoetops for night games but hikes up his pant cuffs to his knees for day games?

7) I’m going to list four pairs of players. Which pair did NOT wear the same uniform number for the Mets?

    a) Jerry Grote and George Foster

    b) Willie Mays and Kelvin Chapman

    c) Gary Carter and Carlos Baerga

    d) Carlos Delgado and Cleon Jones

8) Ron Darling wore three different uniform numbers as a Met. Which one of the following numbers did he NOT wear: 10, 12, 15, 44

9) Which one of the following stories is NOT true:

    a) When Joe Torre stopped being a player-manager and simply became a full-time manager in the middle of the 1977 season, he changed his uniform number from 9 to 10, to signify his change of status.

    b) When pitcher Roger Craig was mired in a 13-game losing streak in 1962, he changed his uniform number from 38 to 13.

    c) When the Mets acquired Mike Piazza in 1998, John Franco gave up uniform number 31 so Piazza could wear it and chose number 45 instead.

10) On Opening Day in 2001, the Mets wore a memorial sleeve patch for two players. They only wore it for that one day. Who were the two players being memorialized on that patch? (You’ll get credit for each correct answer.)

11) Who decides which jersey the Mets will wear each game? Is it:

    a) The starting pitcher
    b) The manager
    c) The equipment manager
    d) Radio broadcaster Howie Rose

12) Two players in Mets history have worn a “C” indicating that they were serving as team captain. Who were those two players? (Separate credit for each right answer.)

13 I’m going to read off a series of names. All of these people wore a Mets uniform in some capacity — player, coach, manager, spring training instructor — and all but two of them finished their playing careers with the Mets. Which TWO of the following players never wore a Mets uniform AS A PLAYER?: Warren Spahn, Yogi Berra, Ralph Kiner, Gil Hodges, Duke Snider, Bob Gibson

14) One of the following unusual uniform numbers has never been worn by a Met. Is it 0, 00, 73, 98, or 99?

15) Uniform number 42 was retired throughout Major League Baseball in 1997, but the 13 players who were already wearing #42 at that time were grandfathered and allowed to continue wearing the number. Of those 13 players, one was already on the Mets and continued wearing 42; another later became a Met and wore 42; and two others later became Mets but did NOT wear 42 for the Mets. Name as many of these four players as possible.

16) During the 1992 season, the Mets won a game when one of their hitters was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th of a tie game. What made it even more unusual is that the ball that hit the batter actually went in between the buttons of his jersey and ended up stuck inside his jersey. Who was the hitter?

17) If you’ve ever seen an authentic Mets jersey, you know that the fabric for the logo and the lettering has a sort of zig-zag pattern to it. This fabric is called:

    a) Zig-zag twill
    b) Herringbone twill
    c) Diagonal twill
    d) Glacier twill

18) Almost exactly 10 years ago — the exact anniversary is next Monday — the Mets took part in Century 21’s “futuristic uniform” promotion by dressing up as the Mercury Mets. But because of the unusual design and configuration of the futuristic jersey, one Mets player’s last name wouldn’t fit on the back of his jersey, so they had to put his nickname on the jersey instead. Which player was it, and what nickname did he have on the back of his jersey? You’ll get separate credit for each answer.

19) Who was the last Mets position player to bat without batting gloves?

20) A tilde is that little squiggle that goes above the N in names like Peña. Which one of the following Mets did NOT have a tilde on his name as it was spelled on the back of his uniform: Roger Cedeño, Rey Ordoñez, Alejandro Peña, Willie Monteñez, Fernando Viña, or Alex Treviño

21) Depending on which uniform combination they’re wearing, the Mets can wear either a blue cap or a black cap, blue undersleeves or black undersleeves, a blue belt or a black belt, and blue socks or black socks. True or false: They can also wear either blue shoes or black.

22) The lyrics to the seldom-heard second verse of “Meet the Mets” includes a reference to the Mets’ uniforms. Which one of the following is it:

    a) “All the fans are true to the orange and blue”

    b) “When they suit up to play, the other teams run away”

    c) “Getting their caps straight and their pants just right, because they have to look good for the fans tonight”

    d) “Never saw a team that looked so good, in those colors from our old baseball neighborhoods”

23) During Pedro Martinez’s recent tenure with the Mets, which of the following uniform quirks did he NOT engage in:

    a) He wore blue undersleeves on the road, even though the team’s official road undersleeve color is black.

    b) He had an extra panel of fabric sewn into his jersey sleeves to make them baggier.

    c) He was fined $5000 by Major League Baseball for pulling his pant legs down under the heels of his spikes.

    d) He repeatedly pitched with his top jersey button buttoned but his SECOND button unbuttoned.

24) Most of the numbers and letters for the Mets’ uniforms are sewn onto the jerseys at a small shop in Queens. The guy who runs the shop is named Russ Gompers. What is the name of his shop — is it:

    a) Russ’s Pro Shop
    b) Stitches
    c) Triboro Sports Outfitters
    d) Diamond Tailors

25) When the Mets hosted the Yankees for three interleague games in 1998, the Mets made a change to their jerseys. It was only for those three games. What was that change?

Uni Watch News Ticker: “I was at the Brooklyn Cyclones game this Sunday and they were giving away an unpainted Sandy the Seagull bobblehead, with a paint kit so the kids could do a DIY paint job,” says Terence Kearns. He’s provided before and after photos here. ”¦ Interesting story about a new kind of wood bat here. ”¦ Really nice American Leagion baseball uni here. ”¦ And look at at the sponsor on the back of this one! ”¦ There’s a new minor league team in the Frontier League, and I kinda like their logo program (with thanks to Jonathan Cain). ”¦ Gotta love this: Lady Met wearing an “I’m Calling It Shea” T-shirt (with thanks to the pseudonymous Coachie Ballgames). ”¦ Oh man, a black armband for a shuttered GM dealership. Further details here (with thanks to Joe Kramer). ”¦ Looks like Orlando Hudson has gone for the Livestrong batting gloves (with thanks to Gabe Greenbaum). ”¦ Also, if you look again at that last photo and also this one, you’ll see that Hudson appears to be leaving the straps on his batting gloves unfastened. Odd (as spotted by Michael Brown). ”¦ Arkansas has a really nice 100th-anniversary logo, which I believe will be worn as a helmet decal this fall. ”¦ Anyone know the story regarding the drop shadow on thie Ernie Davis photo (Interesting find by Chris LaHaye.) ”¦ Awesome set of vintage NFL/IHOP placrmats available here (big thanks to Brinke Guthrie).

    That K-Nine’s logo is pretty sharp. A nice alternate logo would be a backwards K.

    I’m not sure if this was a foretelling sign that no one cared about the Iowa Chops, but I was hunting around for some info on them last night, and came across a discovery of charitable ways.

    The Chops played a LiveStrong game at the end of last season where they link wearing link against the Quad City Flames.

    A LiveStrong game between two teams that died. How ironic.

    Question #13 is delightfully tricky. I love it!

    I think I’ve got 19 or 20 points on the quiz.

    Also, Paul, in #20, isn’t his name spelled “Montañez”, not “Monteñez”

    That picture is actually of a Dodge/Jeep dealership, which is under the Chrysler umbrella of car brands, not GM.

    1. Bengals abd debauchery in the same sentence. I was afraid to open that link.

    2. I’m on vacation for two weeks. Otherwise I would have LOVED to have failed miserably at the MBTN quiz. However, was it an open book quiz?

    My signed copy of Jon’s book would have come in handy.

    And I will ask again:

    If a MLB team were to break out their Turn Ahead the Clock unis would it be considered a throwback?
That K-Nine’s logo is pretty sharp. A nice alternate logo would be a backwards K.
Not that the two teams compete in any way, but it’s interesting to me that they went with green and gold, considering that they’re not too far from the link. (And, in case anyone’s wondering, the Cougars’ colors have nothing to do with the fact that they’re an A’s farm team. They had the same colors when they were affiliated with the Orioles and Marlins.)
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    And that is one fucked-up link. Glad that look didn’t catch on.
    The rules of that NFL/IHOP TV game make it look like an introduction to gambling. Different times? Or has the NFL always been wink-wink about drumming up interest in its product via gaming?
    As a proud Syracuse alum, I’ve seen a number of Ernie Davis photos, but never that one. It’s obviously just a photo shop job for who knows what reason. I don’t think there is any significance behind it.
    /got 17 total points (perfesser lukas scored my test last evening)…probably missed 2 i should have gotten, but also deductively reasoned guessed at 2 that i got correct, so that was a wash
    Okay, I have to know, so someone help me out: what’s that shirt that Sam is wearing (“Tides”)? That is killer!!!
    Being juxtaposed with Marc Anthony just makes them look that much bigger.
    as far as the Ernie Davis photo. It looks as if someone drew that drop shadow on the photo. You can tell that all of the perspective and spacing is off and that you can see the real folds and shadows under the drop shadow
    You basically have to be a Uni Watch regular and a serious Met fan, or grow up around them. Of the 19 or so I got, it seems like half of them were things I learned reading old Met programs and books as a kid, and the other half were things mentioned on this site.
    The AAA Tidewater Tides were the former affiliate of the Mets. They’re now the Norfolk Tides and they’re the Orioles’ AAA farm team.
    Question 1) It is more than halfway through the 2009 season and the Muts are ten (10) games out in the East, who cares what uniforms they are wearing?
    -Love, 2008 W.F.C.
    Unrelated to today’s column, but I notice that in the last several days two major leaguers have been photographed wearing long socks and pants virtually above the knee, showing some skin.
    The latest is Eric Aybar of the Angels, shown sliding into home in today’s NYT.
    Maybe Bill Veeck knew better than many thought when he dressed his White Sox in shorts.
    As a Mets-hater, I think I got like 10-15 pts on the very hard quiz. I’d love to see a quiz like that on my favorite team(s). Good stuff though.
    Belated congratulations to you! You should totally post some pictures of you wearing your World Series ring. Maybe a few shots of you holding the Commissioner’s Trophy? That’d be fantastic.
    Yes, someone did draw the drop shadow on the photo. It was done to accentuate the number “44” – as in 44 days until football season. The website uses pictures to countdown the days. Just as in of a Tulane vs Florida program cover from 1945. The number “45” has been altered to match the respective day in the countdown.
    That’s pretty stupid. It’s the only number in the picture and it’s not like it’s obscured or inconspicuous in any way. Maybe they should have drawn in some swooshes while they were at it.
    Enough about the Mets on this site.
    Awful team, awful stadium (all of them) and clueless hayseed fans.
    And I’m calling it Citi Field, rubes.
    If my eyes are not deceiving me, in that photo of Sam Davison, the Mets game isn’t just on in the background, but the screen has a photo of Oliver Perez wearing the No. 1 Mets no-no… a black jersey.
    How could you not score a perfect score on the quiz?
    In keeping with the theme of today’s article, if you want to know why it seems that the Mets never develop any young talent regularly, it might be because of the VP of Player Development Tony Bernazard.
    Seems harmless enough. Besides, life is a gamble. I love Lt. Frank Drebin’s line when asked if he gambles: “Every time I order out.”
    Speaking of games, has anyone played APBA or Strat-O-Matic games? USA Today Sports Weekly featured them in a column last month. There are even computer versions, with Ernie Harwell doing the call on one of the baseball games. I’m curious, but I wanted to get some opinions from people who’ve played them first.
    Since I was the main defender of Crocs & mandals sandals yesterday, did I just blow your mind?
    I came of age in St. Louis in the 1980’s, and as a result of watching the classic NL East battles of that era between St. Louis and New York, I have grown to hate the Mets. Even after the NL Central was formed and the Cardinals moved to a different division to that of the Mets, I still hold a special disdain for the Mets.
    I can’t even bring myself to read through today’s posting.
    It did bring to mind a classic St. Louis t-shirt design from those mid 80’s years.
    Yes, someone did draw the drop shadow on the photo. It was done to accentuate the number “44” – as in 44 days until football season. The website uses pictures to countdown the days. Just as in of a Tulane vs Florida program cover from 1945. The number “45” has been altered to match the respective day in the countdown.
link agree to kick off the 2010 season in FedEx Field in Landover, Md.
    No word on if a return game to Boise has been planned for the Hokies.
    If there is, kill me now. VT vs BSU will be an eyesore as it is, but the VT jerseys on the smurf turf? Insta-vomit.
Just wait until THIS season starts! link
    Obviously, Boise St has taken it upon themselves to test the abilities of flatscreen HDTVs nationwide.
    Makes you wonder if the HD TV companies have given BSU/Oregon/VT money in hopes the colors of these matchups will blow out the bulbs of your standard rear-projection screens…
Imagine if you will (if a possible return engagement)….
    Boise State in monochrome blue with orange trim (including those damn fine-looking new ass stripes)…
    on a blue field…
    playing VT in maroon helmets, white jerseys and maroon pants, all with orange trim.
    Actually, I think I’d rather not imagine it. Or see it.
    —Ricko
Ugh…
    Knowing our team, we’d probably go white throwback top with maroon throwback pants (VT will be wearing maroon throwbacks this year at least once) or the current white pieces of shit (maroon panels and sleeves) on top of maroon pants. Shoes, gloves, undershirts, etc, will be in orange.
    Oh joy, can’t wait to watch those color combos on the Smurf Turf. ***VOMIT***
    I used to be the same way, but now I’m over it. They haven’t been good enough to really hate since then. Every time I see those batting helmets, I actually feel kind of sorry for them.
    P.S. I can’t believe Yadier Molina is wearing a Cool-flo. I thought for sure that all the Cardinals were going to stay on the right path.
    Love the prototype jersey. Also like the tiger’s head helmet. Not a fan of words on helmets.
    Should the Bungles wait until they get better character before they upgrade the wardrobe or would a wardrobe update help dispel the thuggery and bad football?
    I think these uniforms will have the same problem as the Bengals’ current set. Sure, they look great on a computer screen mock-up, but put them on real players. The sleeve strips would be tailored right off or altered to look like a ridiculous mess.
    All the bengals need to do is take off the dumb sidepanels on the jerseys and that little bit of white stripe at the waistline of the pants. Oh, and win some games.
    To all those who complain that there is too much Mets stuff on this blog, I have two suggestions:
    1) Don’t read it.
    2) Write something interesting about a team and/or sport about which you do care. Paul has run many entries written by others on topics such as Nascar, cycling and soccer. Even though he is not necessarily interested in the topics, he is broadminded enough to realize that others might be.
    Otherwise, shut up!
    We all get it that not everybody is going to be interested in each topic. Stating that you are not interested in something is of no interest to anyone but you.
    You remind me of the old joke about two crotchety old men in a diner:
    Man 1: “The food here is lousy.”
    Man 2: “Yes. And the portions are so small.”
    Oh, and by the way, all of your teams suck. I turn off the TV when they are on. I have an article of clothing mocking each one in an infantile manner. I am so glad they have no success this year. My teams, city, college, high school, elementary school, pre-school, gender, race and religion are so much better than yours!
    Did you think that last paragraph was dumb? Now you know how we feel.
    …. Not SO far, anyway …
    Quick question: To people who own a new performance 5950, do they break in at all? If they do, is there a way to do it easily like hot water worked with the wool ones? Or are they hopeless?
    There’s been a lot of coverage recently of John Daly and his loud new wardrobe. Check out the kid in the orange t-shirt in link from the Canadian Open, I think he’s either worked hard to get the look down pat, or else Daly has relatives in Canada.
    NOTHING at all like the old wool 5950’s.
    The only method that works for me, is buying my regular 7 and 1/8 and using a machinist’s vice to stretch it from both brim to back and side to side.
    The old method of wearing it in the shower for five minutes and dryin it for 24 hours DOES NOT work.
    I would have used flakes instead of O’s for his cereal…
    I’m still trying to break in my Durham Bulls 5950 after about two weeks straight of wearing it in mid-summer Florida heat. I’ve found a bunch of sites out there with tutorials on how to take out the inner stitching and stuff, but I’d rather not risk wasting $33 on my unsteady hands.
I loaded the site just now…and it was WAAAAAAAAY whacked out layout wise. I loaded site then in both Chrome and IE, looked fine. So, I went back in FF..and all the elements had been blocked..and not by me. Total strangeness.
    Advancing aging, or stifling it, are unnecessary routes to take.
    You’re right. Isn’t fan short for fanatic?
    I believe it was Professor Terguson who expressed it best…..
    By my own form of selective association… does this mean many of us are actually fans of Nike? Because a lot of us seem to hate them.
