And who wouldn’t love a Bimbo for Christmas?

bimbo header

So how did you do for the holidays? Get any good uni-swag? Santa was pretty kind to LI Phil, as he scored a Giants sweatshirt (a reminder of good things in the past and better things yet to come) and an Isles sweatshirt (with “19” and “80” on the sleeves, to mark the year of their first Cup). This was a reminder of great things in the waaaaaaaaaayyyy past and nothing but futility, heartache, and despair in the immediate future.

But the real uni-prize came from a buddy, to whom  I off-handedly mentioned I’d love a Bimbo kit after reading Bryan’s “Lost In Translation” piece more than a year ago. (Yeah, I know it’s the sponsor and not the team, but think of the conversation starter it would be for the unknowing.f) I searched high and low for a Bimbo jersey, to no avail, eventually losing hope and interest. Sure, Nike made one, but no way was I paying no $80 for one (that’s a lot of pesos, y’know). So, at the annual exchange of Xmas presents this year, I was so pleasantly surprised to receive that gorgeous thing pictured above. I don’t know if it’s their new shirt, or if it’s even the same team as featured in Bryan’s article  (it’s prolly something he scored in the bargain bin) — and quite frankly, I don’t care. Sure, it’s not quite the Islanders Fisherman sweater I really wanted, but damn, it’s  close enough.

So, it’s show and tell time. How’d you do? What’d ya get? Uni-related gifts and/or nekkid pics of your significant other/gf/wife only please! — Phil

the shirt you got was chivas (de guadalajara), a very successful 11 and more desirable shirt than the other one pictured, which is club america (mexico df)

obviously both are sponsored by bimbo. monterrey is the other club in mexico’s FMF first division that wear bimbo.

i should add that monterrey’s kit looks even better. but chivas is the more popular club. (club america is also popular, but kind of like the dallas cowboys or duke — people love to hate.)

here’s monterrey in action, pretty dope as you can see: link

obviously not everyone will agree with me about chivas vs. america: link

I actually lived in Mexico about 10 years ago and I visti quite often. I recently bought 3 Chivas kits and gave them to my two cousins and kept one for myself. Very high quality conversation starter. (BTW, Bimbo Bread is absolute garbage)

Texas Longhorns burnt orange football jersey, #1.
Herkie Walls, WR. Well, no NOB, but that’s who I’ll choose to say it is.

Herkie Walls (1) and Donnie Little (11). What a great pair of wideouts.

Speaking of wideout, here’s a place you can kill a good half an hour or so…if you like old NFL footage. Good stuff on Unitas & Berry (GGEP), too.
    link

The Islanders? They still playing hockey?

    Hook ‘Em!

Got my dad a Jets hat, but it says Bretts instead of Jets. Same logo and typeface. It was kind of a gag gift since he was a diehard Packers fan, and now he’s torn after all the drama but he love’s it and practically hasn’t taken it off.

    I dunno if it counts as Uni Related gifts but I got;

link (I love Derrick Rose…total mancruch)

link (mine’s blue with a kinda khaki color lettering)

and…a pair of link (big deal for me as a BIG fan of Jordan my whole life and a fan of the Air Jordan’s. It’s nice to know that IF this is, in fact, the final ‘numbered’ release of the Jordan line that I got a pair of them)

I got the new Red Sox cap, not a Sox fan though- Mets. I just really liked the alternate design.

It looks great in person, but I still wish they hadn’t switched to the cool base design. I feel as if the caps don’t fit right when worn forwards, only backwards. Still, I do enjoy it.

man those jordans are awesome joshuaexline!

i got a pens third (no name/number), my first pens jersey since they stopped wearing these: link

that was my first ever hockey jersey. i miss those. loved the diagonal lettering. then i look at the beauty i got from the ‘rents and, well, i dont miss it as much haha.

One of my favorite gifts this year were three pairs of link that my girlfriend bought me, along with the Sox road Thermabase dugout jacket.

I was hoping to have one of Man United’s blue third shirts under the tree, but no dice. I did get a blue iPod shuffle, though.

no uni swag for me either, except for whatever i get from the raffle. my parents decided it was better to get me stuff for after i graduate from college. oh well.

Scored a new link (the old one was getting awfully funky…) I’d already received “replica” link and link jerseys for my birthday; I turned the old-school Cards jersey into a link by adding his #1 with NNOB.

And once upon a time, this link was Betty Boop’s buddy!

Nice stuff, Josh. I wouldn’t be too worried about never seeing a pair of XXIV’s! :)

Closest thing I got to uni related this year was this: link

But hey when you have a new house, you can get better things I suppose. But I still have Christmas with the wife’s family in a couple weeks (hey that’s what happens when they’re all spread across 3 states), so there is still hope I get these:

I didn’t receive any uni-centric gear this year.

I am not one to wear team jerseys or paraphanelia around, however I do plan on working on at least one DIY Long sleeve Tee-shirt this break.

I did, however, receive this great sports book:

And my kids made out a’ight:

I apologize for the non-uni pics.

Wife got me “Best by Number” …. she was concerened ’cause she knows I’ve become quite the “uniform afficionado” (or snob, as she sez) …. LOVED it! My dad and I had a BALL leafing through it. Interesting omission in light or recent past – no Sammy Baugh for “33”

    ttp://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh169/mpowerrs1634/DSC02682.jpg

    UW, I’m really sorry.

BTW, I saw an ad that the UA All-America game is next week. We should prepare accordingly.
Phil, love the Giants sweatshirt. Where did you get it and are other teams available?
well…it was a gift, (and no gift receipt, since the giver knew it wouldn’t be returned), so i honestly don’t know where it came from…i’d guess a “Modells” or similar type sporting goods store…and i’d assume all 31 other teams have a similar design
Hey, just to let you know, you have the 07-08 version of Chivas’ kit. Here is this year’s version:

ok cool…thanks…honestly, i’d like to get more into soccer footy, and well, now that i have a jersey, what better way to pique my interest? btw…my offer to all UWers still stands…if you’d like to help me with a soccer column some future weekend, gimme a shout (phecken[at]yahoo[dot]com)

I didn’t get that much uni swag but I did get this book:

    link

It has a lot of unis from a ton of different times. Probably the worst one I’ve seen so far was the Jazz Purples from the late 90s. Yeah Greg Ostertag!

BTW, Last year around this time, I was in Niketown NYC, and they had a large selection of those Bimbo jerseys reasonably priced.
I already mentioned these on Thursday, but as far as uni-related Christmas gifts, I got link.

Plus there was link (hey, the word “uniform” is on it) from link.
I love the skull-cap…I am actually going to watch the Winter Classic.

I didn’t get any uni stuff, but I did get the “Complete Calving and Hobbes”. Every C&H comic strip ever, but the best part is the sketches and description of the design process and evolution of the strip. Great read!

Me…I’m the egg cook in the house, but I won’t eat them without ketchup/catsup. Notice the pans behing the Heinz.

I guess that is somewhat Uni-related.

Anyone else tackling a DIY-Uni project this holiday?

Hemogoblin was working on something, no?

got an NFL Sunoco album in perfect condition- musta been in a warehouse somewhere, thanks eBay- and, well, make it a 007 Christmas, baby.

    link

I’m a Penn State student, so of course everything I received had to do with the Nittany Lions (and mostly everything was Nike, so click at your own risk).

Got a pair of shorts that the basketball team wears. I think their unis (and team) are underrated-at least this year–http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31yl9e%2B6VJL._SL160_.jpg

    This football T-shirt–http://www.collegegear.com/sf/stores/1265/p-382122.shtml

That’s pretty much everything that was uni-related (the shirt isn’t really either, I just think its a really cool shirt), but I assure you, I had a blue and white X-mas. Happy Holidays Uni Watch.

I received david ortiz jersey, tho it does have NOB (not sure if I should return it for one without NOB?) nonetheless still a good gift. also got a coaching lacrosse book that has some great photos from early 80’s lacrosse action.

On the topic of DIY, does anybody have any idea when Mark Teixeira’s Yankee number will be finalized? I would love to price a replica pinstriped Yankee jersey + rear numbers + MLB batting man logo at rear neckline + Yankee Stadium Inaugural Season patch, and see how much I can save vs buying a “pre-assembled” authentic.

I got a really nice Lance Alworth jersey. This item is unbelievable, 100% custom made. The nice thing is the jersey sizing is from the old 60’s patterns so they actually can be worn. The NOB and number are not half way down your arse like the jerseys are today. Heavy weight durene, everything sewn on. Almost too nice to wear.

That’s the one I was thinking of, but for some reason couldn’t get onto the SI Vault the other day to doublecheck it. Was thinking the jacket was open showing the jersey. Maybe I was recalling of an inside photo. But, thanks to that SPORT cover you found, at least we know they DID wear the pins with red hats, as least in spring training. Thanks (and I still think that would have been a great looking uni…navy pins with red lettering, hat, sleeves and stirrups).

Bimbo bought a Texas regional bakery (Mrs. Baird’s) several years ago. You can get Bimbo pastries in most DFW convenience stores, and I’d imagine it’s the same with Houston, San Antonio and the Valley, too.

As for uni gear, I got my long-desired Jason Witten Cowboys authentic. (It’s in the bad-luck blues, but I don’t care.) I also scored another Cowboys t-shirt and a long-sleeved tee.

My wife works for a company that makes promotional items and she’s in charge of the embroidery department. They have a very strict policy against doing “personal” orders but at Christmas they can do several items so each year I can get a shirt with whatever embroidery I want.

P.S. Paul, on a related topic, I haven’t forgotten about what we discussed a couple months ago, you will be getting something very soon.

I got a copy of “The Baseball Book”. I think I have already studies every picture.

My favorite is the two page color photo at Tiger Stadium when the seats were green. Takes me back.

    Happy Holidays all.

What’s with North Carolina’s whacked off pants stipes? Are they supposed to look like they’re playing flag football? Or like they all got Lara Croft gun & holster sets for Christmas, maybe?

Then again, there also are West Viginia’s jersey, um…decorations, going every which way. My Aunt Chrisine used to wear blouses that looked like that. Of course, her SOFA looked that, too. Come to think of it, SHE looked like a sofa. In those blouses, I mean.

Got a Curtis Martin replica in green. Not a bad bargain jersey for a non-Jets fan…it fits and it’s a classic design.

1,000 pardons if this shows as a repost. I have one computer that says it is post #54 and another that says mmwatki’s is post 54. So I’m trying again. Thanks.

I was helping my grandma clean up her basement the day after Christmas, when I came across an old Tommy Maddox jersey Steelers jersey, not the greatest Steeler ever, but I am sure I won’t be seeing too many people with one of these babies on, even in Pittsburgh. Here’s a pic link

I’m pretty sure Bimbo crap products can be found in pretty much any US city with a large Mexican population. I see them all over the place in Chicago. Hell, the convenience store in my neighborhood sells them and we really don’t live particularly close to a Mexican neighborhood.

link are great. Well, they’re great in the same sense that Wonder Bread/Hostess cakes are great.

You can get Bimbo products in my hometown of Pontiac, Mich. There’s a large population of Mexican-Americans that have come to work in the auto factories.

They’re getting ready to drop the puck on a great uni matchup. HNIC’s got Pittsburgh vs. Montreal — Pens are in their alts. That’s channel 215 on DirecTV.

I got a retro 1960 Blackburn Rovers FC shirt.

Now I have to track down a photo of the back of the shirt in 1960 so I can DIY a number.

I’m sure this has been discussed plenty here (I don’t pay much attention to NBA uni discussions), but is there a limit on the number of times NBA teams can wear alts?

The Bulls are wearing black in Atlanta tonight. They did the same in Miami last night. Tonight’s also the 5th time out of their last 7 road games they’ve gone with the alts. (Prior to last night it was Milwaukee, Memphis and Charlotte in black, followed by Boston and Detroit in red.)

Hi neighbor! And to keep this uni-related I received a MSU Spartans sweatshirt (hooded!), knit cap and throw pillow.

Phil, I hereby nominate the Emerald Bowl as worst uni match-up of the week. Miami Hurricanes with the “eyebrows” on the back of their jersey and the Cal Bears…well, I need not remind you of that.

Believe it or not, I got nuthin’ on Xmas day. (Dad paid my car repair bill from earlier in month and said that was my gift, very generous). The wife did not even make an effort, just said buy what you want. I am getting a league jacket that I wanted Monday!

Yup, those would be the ones. I bought three over the summer, and this is now my fourth. I still really prefer the fit of my older, non-cool base caps. I don’t know what has caused the fit change, but the hats just seem to be bigger and awkward. Very disheartening for someone who finds baseball caps to be the most enjoyable and financially reasonable uniform elements in sports.

Being a high school senior who plans on attending Temple, I recevied about three or four temple t-shirts and a Temple hoodie. I would say I am prepared to cheer on Al Golden’s Owls.

i thought the emerald bowl jersey matchup looked pretty sweet. i know the team jerseys by themselves are rather too full of flair for most uni watchers liking. i hated cal’s blues this year, and the paw scratches on the legs. but something about the yellows against the white/orange of miami spoke of a kind of classic “bowl day” pairing. it looked tropical, fresh and fun. and the game was damn fine.

also of note (i didn’t read comments yesterday so excuse me if it was mentioned): they explained in the cavs/wizards game thursday that neither team wore the christmas day snowflake because lebron opted for cleveland to wear the blue alts at home, forcing washington to don its whites — neither of which came embroidered with the snowflake/concentration camp patch.
