George Is Getting Upset!

Hey, remember that ESPN baseball commercial from far too long ago with “The Rick?” As in, “Hi, my name is Rick, but my friends call me The Rick.”

Well, this is The Don. Fun fact about The Don: Not Italian, though he’s still a Don. As in Don Broadhurst, from England.

The Don whacked beat Isaac Quaye on points last night in a super flyweight title bout. Good for The Don. But here’s more from The Don. Check out his socks — St. George’s cross. Plus, look at the panel on his leg — does that say “Geezers Palace”? Indeed, it does. Geezers Palace sells boxing stuff.

The Don accepts your gratitude for learning new things today. — Bryan

I wonder what the tatoos say on his arm and side. I’m intrigued at what people “type” on themselves.

Checkout this http://floridatoday..... Weird helmet numbers from Melbourne High in Florida…look as if they are hand painted on with different personalized messages.

“Super Flyweight” — The newish names for the tweener weight divisions in boxing like this one crack me up. (I think the IBF still calls it “Junior Bantamweight”.)

OK, “Super Welterweight” does sound more imposing than “Junior Middleweight” but “Super Flyweight?” Please.

Wonder why boxing doesn’t just use the numbers of the weight classifications to identify them (like NCAA wrestling does)? Guess that would make too much sense… “The Don” fought in the 115-pound weight class; whether it’s “Super Flyweight” or “Junior Bantamweight” is immaterial…

According to Wikipedia, there are eighteen freakin’ weight classes in pro boxing! The NCAA has ten weight classes for wrestling; Olympic wrestling has eleven weight classes in the Greco-Roman competition, and ten weight classes in freestyle, and uses names for the weight classifications.

Scott County, TN High School football team added crosses and black tapes to their helmets last night in honor of four cheerleaders killed in car wreck last weekend.

In Thursdays comments, someone mentioned that the Hockey News had come out with a special edition issue called the “Greatest Masks of All-Time.”

Well, I picked it up yesterday, and it was seriously worth the eight bucks. I thought it would just show what they thought were the best masks, but it actually goes into the history of the mask, the cross over with baseball catcher’s mask, how masks are made, etc…Highly recommended.

Yeah, I’ve got ’em. I particularly like one for a “Luxury Rehab Locator.” What in the Google database caused the system to decide that Uni Watchers are in need pain relievers, antidepressants, and rehab to beat the addiction to said pain relievers and antidepressants?

On an unrelated Saturday morning note: is it possible to have a “candy hangover?” I was at home giving out candy all night, had a beer with dinner, not even remotely partying, but woke up with a hangover-ish headache!

I’ve got them too. Truthfully, I just got used to ignoring them. It seems so many pages have random ad links, that I’ve grown accustomed to them. Half the time, I don’t even notice them unless I make a point to.

I can imagine, with the current economy/healthcare crisis, that the pain pill sites get a bunch of hits. Who knows about legality and legitimacy though.

The person who tapes his hands and then his gloves has to sign the tape in case something happens or something is wrong with the tape, like if they have doctored it somehow. I believe the sanctioning organization keeps the tape as evidence.

When I played football in college, I had some joker on another team who tried to do the John Randle look. Our entire team laughed at him for the entire first half. We made it a point to destroy that guy (a TE) every chance we got. After halftime the make-up was gone.

They can pretty much sign it however they want, a lot of guys will actually use a signature. The only one like that that I can think of is a former boxer named Vinny Pazienza, if he does the tape he’ll write PAZ in huge letters.

Last night, the AHL’s Manitoba Moose played in Rockford against the IceHogs. While that fact isn’t strange or uni-worthy, the Moose wore something that I haven’t seen on their jerseys all season thus far: a Luc Bourdon Memorial Patch.

You can see it on Cory Schneider’s left shoulder.

Good God! These three factors make it look like a high school game on a cable access channel:
A)the yellow monochrome look (with white helmets for a lil’ extra oomph)
    B) The Aztecs’ black pants paired with maroon helmets
    C) The overall shit video quality of the broadcast

remember the rumor, i think it was reported on either MBTN or another met fan site…about the mets having a dark gray away jersey, with “Mets” in script, and blue and orange piping???

well…i was in the sports authority and there was one exactly as described…for $80, made by majestic (no name or number on back)…looked to be authentic otherwise, not a replica…i attempted to take a pic with my cell, but im like technologically retarded so it didn’t come out

so…maybe that is where the rumor (since squashed by mr. lukas) was being fueled

having said this…it was pretty sweet looking, much better than the black mess they break out now…and i could certainly live with it if they were to replace the current roadies with it…it was VERY dark gray, however, almost charcoal, so i can’t imagine they’d have matching pants, and what the hell would be the point of introducing a dark gray alt?

I have the the Texas Tech/UT game on in the background. I glanced at the screen when Tech was around the 30-yard line and nearly had a seizure. With the stadium name, the Big XII logo, the sharp contrast between paint and FieldTurf, the Bottom Line below, the info bar above, and the monochrome black and white unis flying around it was nearly impossible to watch.

At least it improved some when they got to an more open area of the field.

  • LI Phil | November 1, 2008 at 8:28 pm |

If you do a search on “charcoal fashion jersey” it looks like they make those for just about all the teams. The Mets version appears to be about the best of the bunch. I saw a few others that looked OK (Cardinals, White Sox, Tigers, Yankees, Mariners) but the colors don’t really pop the way the royal blue & orange do. Some looked flat-out horrible (Cubs, Red Sox, Angels).

Although you said in your other post that the picture doesn’t do it justice, so maybe they all look pretty decent up close.

I’ll say this: Texas Tech would look a lot better without that red bullshit pattern they have on their unis. I’m not one for monochrome, but the solid black with solid black helmets and whatnot does look okay. But if they choose to do the solid black, I would prefer it without the UA red trim.

It looks even stranger when you are at the game and there is a green glow from the booth! I was at the night games at Camp Randall last month and the glow was sorta strange.
BTW the Bucks look great in their red alts tonite!

For once, I am ashamed that Berkeley is just down the road from me.

What the hell? Now Southern Miss is in all gold. Three schools in one day? Good grief. At least West Virginia didn’t wear all gold (granted, they were on the road, so they weren’t likely to wear gold jerseys. But they could have)

Cal is the new Oregon. Seven looks in eight games:
8/30 v. Michigan State: gold over blue
9/6 at Washington State: white monochrome
9/13 at Maryland: white over gold
9/27 v. Colorado State: blue monochrome
10/4 v. Arizona State: blue over white
10/18 at Arizona: white monochrome (the only repeat so far)
10/25 v. UCLA: blue over gold
    11/ v. Oregon: gold monochrome
Man, am I glad to be a Stanford fan!

In terms of jersey/pant combos, the only looks we’ve yet to see are white over blue and gold over white.

Has this been mentioned yet? If so, I don’t recall, but it looks like the Isles’ alts might eventually become their regular home jerseys.

This is an amazing site. Uncrate has a lot of good stuff, not just sports stuff. But there are a ton of good things they’ve accumulated here.

every comment references the isles as “we”…christ…well…the isles themselves did have a slogan one year, “we’re all islanders”…wonder where they get it

    *sighs*

I’m watching College Gameday Final right now, and they just showed the Georgia Tech v. FSU highlights. Georgia Tech’s uniforms are really bad. The mustard yellow is downright terrible. And the side striping on both the jersey and pants just doesn’t sit right. Not to mention the chest and shoulder striping.

Cal needs to go to their Royal and Gold seventies throwbacks full time. The clawmark side stripes on the current unis are terrible.

Did anybody see that Marshawn Lynch was wearing a pink mouthguard, along with his standard two-colored Magnigrip Elite Remix gloves, blue/white and red/white, in the game today against the Jets? Does anybody know why? I am assuming for breast cancer awareness…..

Re: Texas Tech’s all blacks –

If you’re the RED Raiders, shouldn’t RED be your primary color? This is the kind of thing I would expect from Aggies…
