Wow, The Past Was Kinda Ugly

Tulsa wore a throwback uniform (an inaccurate one, at that) for its home opener against New Mexico on Saturday. This is the normal Tulsa look, and here are some alternate throwback pics. For something pretty simple, there’s a lot going on there.

Depending upon how far you want to take things — the correct answer is always “too far” — both teams were wearing throwbacks. Take a closer look at New Mexico. Does that template look familiar? It should — Miami wore it a few years back (like in 2002). Good to see Nike is recycling. Everybody knows that’s good for the environment, if not for the eyes. — Bryan

The Tulsa football throwback is no different in its inaccuracies than, say, the powder blue throwbacks the Toronto Blue Jays wear, which didn’t have belts back in the ’70s and ’80s. The university is at least acknowledging that it’s not an exact replica.

Why call it a throwback if it isn’t a throwback?
The Bluejays don’t consider theirs throwbacks. They call them Friday or Sunday uniforms.

I know that championship and locker room hats/t-shirt talk is often frowned upon on this site, but I found it interesting that the Rays wore hats and shirts with their “9=8” slogan on it (some of the later pictures in the gallery above). The shirts even have the hideous MLB postseason logo on it which makes me think that it is official MLB merchandise. The Cubs yesterday (and Angels a while back) got their division championship gear but since the Rays only clinched a playoff spot for now, they couldn’t break those out yet and I guess wanted an alternative.

For those out of the loop, “9=8” was Joe Maddon’s saying in spring training that 9 players playing hard and working together for 9 innings equals one of the 8 playoff spots in October.

“Flashback Fridays began in 2006 to coincide with the Blue Jays 30th anniversary as a Major League Baseball franchise. In 2008, the Blue Jays will continue to build on the success of Flashback Fridays with the re-introduction of their royal blue road uniforms. A throw back to 1985, the uniform features the original Blue Jay logo on the middle of the jersey and an elastic style belt. The team will wear the retro uniform for every Friday night home game at Rogers Centre.”

Anyway, there’s no one “official” definition for “throwback”. Even if the purists here don’t agree, I think most people think of something like the Blue Jays uniform as a throwback, even if it’s not exact.

Sadly, they call them “throwbacks” so people will part with their hard-earned money…for it’s all a money grab. If, MLB, for example wanted to institute a “TRUE” throwback mode, it should mandate a return to pants mid-calf…stirrups…caps worn straight and true…jerseys that fit correctly…!!!

TRADITION–TRADITION–TRADITION…and don’t get met started with the NBA!!!???!!!
Sadly, they call them “throwbacks” so people will part with their hard-earned money…for it’s all a money grab.
Pretty sure they’d sell the exact same amount if they used the word “throwback” or if they didn’t. Anyway, pretty much everything about sports is a money grab, so it’s not surprising that selling uniforms is, too.

I don’t understand why you all get upset when a template is re-used?
Its like you are looking for something to complain about.

New Mexico has actually worn that template for a few years. They haven’t updated like the other schools that followed Miami. It is no different then a plethora of teams taking up the Broncho’s horned look.

Just to clarify, the style that New Mexico is wearing is called the “Corvallis” in Nike’s catalog (and it’s also been worn by Oregon State, thus the name). That style may be a few years old, but its still a current offering in 2009. So yeah… it’s not recycling, it’s not old, it’s just a template being a template. No biggie.

St. Louis Blues unveiled their new thirds just now on their site. Looks like a pretty traditional hockey sweater, at least when you compare it to the reebok monstrosities they brought out last season.

I was watching to LSU-Auburn game last night. It looked like Auburns helmets weren’t a true white, but sort of an off white, somewhere between light beige and white. Did anybody else see this or was it just my tv?

Thumbs up for the jersey! Slight problem: the pants/breezers piping that is custom-designed for the home and away jerseys looks really, really out of place with the third.

I think it might be your tv. I have seen the Auburn helmets up close many times at Jordan-Hare (and I’m not even an Auburn fan) and they are a true white.

I can hardly pay attention to Giants/Bengals, the Bengals’ uniforms are so ridiculously low-rent.

Those uniforms always looked terrible, but it seems like they’ve deteriorated. Shiny panels with the same pattern as an adjacent matte panel, orange nameplates that don’t line up with the orange shoulder panels, peel-and-stick stripes… They just look absolutely bush-league. Embarrassing.

Watching the Cheifs at the Falcons and either Cheifs Tight End Tony Gonzalez has a lopsided head or he is wearing the NFL equivalent of his hat cocked to the side. The right side of his helmet comes down much furter than the left side does. Kind of surprised he helmet hasn’t flown off yet.

The Redskins look so good in their white-over-white today. The dark red pants so dreadful. They could only look better if they brought back the yellow pants with thin-stripes.

Still no GU63 sticker on Jamarcus Russell’s helmet. bad thing about the bay area- you always have to see Raiders games when they’re on the road.

I was at the Tulsa game. I thought the uniforms were fine, but they looked strange in a stadium where everyone was wearing blue shirts.

On a non-uni related note, TU’s offense is extremely fun to watch.

And at least in terms of TU, they were not selling any sort of “throwback” merchandise at all.

I believe this is becausee of the metallic paint they’ve added to most teams’ helmets this decade…the logo was metallic as well just like th Vikings helmet that was pointed out last weekend(?).

Agreed – as a lifelong Skins fan I haven’t always been a big fan of the burgundy pants. The white on white look is real sleek and contemporary, without going all crazy on a new design. The throwbacks they wore last year vs. the Giants would be the only improvements to me. But the white on white looks real sharp.

Last week or so someone posted a link to a thread with a bunch of pictures of Shea Stadium over the years, and now the NY Daily News put something it up (although much smaller) on their website

    link

Check out the outfit on the Yearbook Lady in picture #7…the 60’s must’ve been something, y’know.

Picture #8 is equally interesting because it is of baseball’s first female umpire.

Bills in those incredible throwbacks . . . Broncos in their orange alternates . . . Saints in the gold pants on the road (perhaps they’ve gotten rid of those hideous black pants) . . . so it isn’t all that bad.

Watching the Seahawk run it up on the Rams right now.

Noticed that the ‘Hawks have two players named Wallace (QB Seneca and SS C.J.) but no initial in the NOB.

I have to disagree, didn’t like the all-white when Spurrier used it and I still don’t. It just looks too much like a practice uni to me. But if Skins fans are OK with, that’s fine with me. As long as they don’t go all-burgundy!

I agree that Denver looks really sharp.

Stopped off at the HHH Metrodome today to watch the Vikes and Panthers play today. Aside from the downgrade of the Vikings unis a few years ago (and aside from the well established anti-purple Uniwatch stance) not a ton of uni-related things going on from our view in section 239. That is, on Mars. I did spot a strange trend in the player’s parking lot though. Many cars had the and most had the manufacturer’s badges taken off. So removal of logo creep on the cars being replaced with advertising for the owner. One thing was for sure – there was enough chrome on those cars I could use the grill as a mirror.

Yeah KEK, that was created during the Spurrier era. Although I have no back up on this, it was most likely his personal distain for anything red. In the highlight film that year, they show him during his first practice ragging on one of the assistants for “looking too Seminoles”. He was clad in black & white ‘Skins gear.

For quite a while, when you visited the Stadium after 1973, it was almost always referred to as the NEW Yankee Stadium. The 1970’s were not an overly nostalgic period. That’s why there was no hue & cry over changing it SO much.

Very few colleges sell merchandise for their one-off retro uniforms.

I’m sure some have, but I can’t think of any. And I know that Wisconsin didn’t when they flashed back to the 1960s for the grand re-opening of Camp Randall.

    Hi yourself Phil :)

Don’t forget to include Miller into this melody of nausea.

He actually felt the need to state (like it was a secret that no one would know) that Yankee Stadium is where Yankee fans go to congregate and celebrate the team.

They should just turn off the microphones, lock the door and not let any of them out.

I’d rather watch the game with no announcers than with ESPN’s link.

I’ve seen the Cal-Berkeley Joe Roth #12 jerseys available online. As far as I know, those were one-time specials last year. Let’s see if they come back.

Shep needs to be there. How much of the new guy’s “accent” is real. I mean I’ve never heard another human being sound like Bob Sheppard, what’s the chance.
I know that, I was refering to Ronan’s intro.

Yeah, no need to say “now batting” but I’m certain he said it for pitching changes, maybe pinch hitters. Also, never introduced Al Oliver (or any other player) as “number zero”. Zero is an integer, not a number he said…CLASSIC!

Yeah, really appropriate bring in Kay instead of the guy who called Larson’s PG. Hard to believe he wouldn’t be there. Oh yeah, Bob Wolff isn’t a panelist on ESPN’s The Sports Reporters. Just waiting for the cross-promo.

No, he’s not an ESPN property. O’s still have a chance in this one, I think Houk is going to bring in Lindy McDainel.

Any chance this gets lost in the trip across the street: link

its good to see the Broncos in orange again (I went to the game and didn’t even know it was one of the orange Sundays, there’s another one later this season).

Gotta disagree with the “white-out” on the Redskins though. I always thought the white jersey/burgundy pants was one of the best looks, especially when they wore it at home. If they’re going to wear the dark pants though, they need to make sure they wear striped socks though. The monochrome leg/calf is horrible.

…just noticed during the commercials of the Packers/Cowboys game that the NFL logo at the end of the league’s commercials are actually starting as the link and transitioning into the link. Kinda cool, subtle graphic switchero.

The dark red pants so dreadful. They could only look better if they brought back the yellow pants with thin-stripes.
I have to disagree, didn’t like the all-white when Spurrier used it and I still don’t. It just looks too much like a practice uni to me. But if Skins fans are OK with, that’s fine with me. As long as they don’t go all-burgundy!
I liked when the Skins wore the burgundy pants with the white jerseys. They don’t look quite right in white from head to toe.
I think they look good almost all the time, as long as they use the solid burgundy socks with the white pants and the stripped socks with the burgundy pants. I’ve never seen the ‘Skins in solid burgundy, so I dont think we have to worry about that.
I’m a lifelong Skins fan I really like the “all-whites”. I would REALLY like to see the throwbacks that the Skins wore under Spurrier. The 70th anniversary 1960s era really dark burgandy jerseys with the spearhead helmets. You know, the ones that looked like Seminole helmets. Those uniforms were by far the best.

I don’t know exactly when they started Frank, maybe 1979, definitely by 1980. Hated it until Oct. 10, 1980. Sang it to a lot of angry fans, risked my life, loved every minute of it. Was Frank after losses then.

Phil, my NY memories don’t go much further than 1986 so anything I remember (and the Mets stuff is foggy) doesn’t go beyond that.

Do I remember correctly hearing Olivia Newton John during the “Magic Is Back” era?

That is, on Mars. I did spot a strange trend in the player’s parking lot though. Many cars had the and most had the manufacturer’s badges taken off. So removal of logo creep on the cars being replaced with advertising for the owner. One thing was for sure – there was enough chrome on those cars I could use the grill as a mirror.
It appears Chester is well overdue for a vehicle inspection.

i am a student at UNM and those are not our throwbacks. Yes, nike gave us Miami’s old unis, but those are our current ones. They have been for a couple of years. And tulsa can wear whatever they want, they stacked over 600 yds on us.
