Well. Umm … there’s this. Apparently Nike’s “our uniforms are lighter and therefore better” campaign has really taken off. The pants are so thin you can see through them. I guess that would make them lighter, huh?

But the see through pants, which can also be seen here (sorry — and thanks to Kate for the screen grab), are on the same guy in both shots — running back Daniel Herron. I think perhaps it’s time for some new pants, huh? That or maybe a nice pair of compression shorts next time. — Bryan

I think it’s about time Nike put this worn out template out to pasture.

What was with Ohio State having two #2’s as well, I know Pryor had it as well as some defensive back?

there were two different #2’s on the team because college rosters are so big, there are not enough numbers to go around….i believe the only rule is that you can not have the same number on the field twice at the same time

A lot of college teams have multiple players with the same #. USC’s running back was #4, and there was a player I saw on defense also wearing #4.

I was at the Syracuse-Penn State game yesterday, and watching through binoculars, many PSU players had the see-through (white) pants look as well.

I don’t know why, but I hate when QBs wear #2. Not as much as I hate the tapering helmet stripe, mind you, but it just doesn’t seem “quarterback-ish”.

Know what you mean, but then I always think of Tom Clements. Tape guy, big wins at Notre Dame, great career in Canada, now one of the better QB coaches in the game.

    link

Another “2” we sometimes forget about: Doug Flutie with Patriots and Bears.

Never could figure out why the NFL was so down on Flutie. Know what his career record as a starter was when he was wavied out of the NFL and went to Canada? 14-9. At the time, a helluva lot better percentage than some guys who were starters for other teams.

Yup, was like as a group they couldn’t admit maybe they were wrong about the guy. He could play.

Arkansas State’s Red Wolves broke out of their usual link home look by breaking out bright link last night against Southern Miss. The photo doesn’t quite do the look justice; those jerseys were a bright scarlet, and were “broken out” following the pre-game warmups.

Unfortunately, since the Red Wolves lost the game to the Golden Eagles, I suspect A-State will be “back in black” for the rest of the season.

On the flip side of the 2s, here’s a quarterback who wore the number in the NFL for far too long, when it could have been given to Flutie.

True, Flutie never got a fair shake in the NFL, but I’ll always think of him as a #22.

Tim Couch and Aaron Brooks didn’t do much for the number – maybe Matt Ryan (really a #12 at heart) and/or JaMarcus Russell will change my perception.

Does anybody know if it’s possible to buy authentic NFL or college football jerseys with capped sleeves and that are slim-fitting in the torso? Have you ever noticed when players wear their jerseys without shoulder pads in pre-game, the jerseys always fit snugly? Whenever I see people wearing NFL or college jerseys (replica or authentic), they are always huge.

I always think of Flutie as #22 as well. Boston College, and of course my late, lamented New Jersey Generals.

I noticed a new football helmet being worn that I have never seen before. I saw it while watching UAB play Tennessee on TV at a sports bar.
At least a couple players for UAB was wearing it. One of the players wearing the new helmet was #18, a defensive back for UAB.
This helmet was not the new Riddell helmet Washington Redskin’s Chris Cooley is wearing and no it wasn’t one of the trio of new helmets by Schutt (DNA, Air XP or the ION).
This helmet did appear to be possibly a Riddell helmet, but with a more traditional facemask like used for the the VSR-4 or Schutt Pro-Air, Air Advanatge or XP helmets. The facemask didn’t look like a current Riddell or Schutt model though.

I didn’t check to see if it was mentioned in yesterday’s comments, but Lou Holtz’s ND cap that he wore for his honorary captain/celebration of ’88 championship game gig yesterday had a huge Reebok logo over the back adjustable strap hole. I thought it odd, that adidas, or someone at Notre Dame would get him a different one. On the other hand, it looked a lot better than the coaches’ gear that Nike and adidas roll out these days, which are mostly ugly. Holtz’s hat was solid navy, ND in gold.

Um, I knew what it was SUPPOSED to be, but those sloping ‘shoulders’ off the dome make it look like a helmet.

Wow, helmet sticker only for GU and no huge jersey patch. I thought they were wearing the patch all season. NFL must’ve realized they looked like crap.

Like I predicted last week, the GU memorial has moved to the helmet. Good move, NFL. The patches reminded me of Tim Hudson’s JH patch in their huge garishness.

SO glad to see the huge patches gone from the GB Packers uniforms. They don’t have as much room as other teams and were looking mightily squished last week. Much better today as a sticker on the helmet.

It is. UAB is one of the test schools. Nevada is another I know of off the top of my head.

I just turned on the tube and Washington is in White pants with the white shirts and solid burgundy socks again. I know this combo has been discussed before, but I have to say it feels cheap to me. I am a Cowboy fan so it doesn’t matter to me if Washington wants to look like crap when they play, but I do miss the striped white socks.

Jets in regular home greens today. Not that I’m complaining, but weren’t they planning on going with Titans gear today?

My guess is they didn’t want Favre’s home debut to be in an alternate uni. Haven’t heard anything, though.

The Texas Rangers are still wearing their “Stars & Stripes” cap (with the Gray S/L), while the Oakland A’s are wearing their normal Home cap, the green and yellow with the Home Whites.

Along the same lines as the transparent pants, it bothers me just as much when you look at a jersey and can distinctly see the shoulder pads underneath.

Isn’t there a way to make uniforms light and breathable without being able to see through em?

Not really. To get them to breathe you need holes. To get them to breathe to the level the NFL teams want them, they have to either have a lot of small holes or larger holes. Either way, you’ll be able to see the pads.

I didn’t check to see if it was mentioned in yesterday’s comments, but Lou Holtz’s ND cap that he wore for his honorary captain/celebration of ‘88 championship game gig yesterday had a huge Reebok logo over the back adjustable strap hole.

At the time Lou left ND, the school did not have an all-sports shoe contract (most of the teams wore Champion uniforms). The major coaches had their own personal shoe deals; Lou’s was with Reebok, so he wore Reebok shoes and apparel.

It remains to be seen if, in game 2, they’ll wear the green that they were originally going to wear Friday and then were going to wear yesterday.

I dunno how about this on the sleeve?

How ’bout just axe the patch on the pants. It has a funny way of pinching the stripe anyway.

Houston goes on a road trip after Milwaukee, probably didn’t want to bother packing two sets of pants.

at least the brownies are wearing their ‘normal’ unis…not a big fan of the brown leggings however…god help us if they do break out the brown trou

No, thats been a problem with the white RBK pants for years, I noticed it several years ago with the Eagles whites. But I believe its only with the white ones and its usually on the big guys who are reeeeaaaaally stuffed into them and its not nearly as bad as Nike’s where you can see skin tone.

And the Rams definitely need to do something like link when in the navy pants. Or borrow some striped socks from the Patriots…please.

With or without the logo on the pants I think putting the full bodied panther on the sleeves would look sharp.

speaking of players wearing pads/mouth pieces from previous teams, LaRon Landry still wears LSU shoulder pads.

Also noticed the see-through pants on the Redskins today.

    (second picture in the slideshow)

And the Saints collar color seems to be a brighter yellow than the number and name. I looked for a pic of today’s game but couldn’t come up with one that illustrated my point. Maybe one will surface in the next few days.

i know this is not an entirely new phenomenon, but it’s really bothering me especially on QBs, who have actual sleeves…

PLEEEEEEZE either ditch the stripes OR make them go all around the arm…i know the linemen and, well, everyone but kickers (some) have the cuffs, but it really looks like shit

it’s annoying me on roethlisberger, but other qb’s have it (eli for example)…i hate truncated stripes (don’t like it on the shoulder stripe either, a la the colts, for example)

oh well…there’s more things that annoy me, but putting stripes that don’t go around (and which historically used to) pisses me off

i don’t know what the solution is, because players are going to wear these jersey cuts into the foreseeable future…and you’re prolly not gonna get teams to change their ‘look’ even if that look now looks lame…

    /off rant

yea favre’s jockstrap was WAY too visible today. and i saw what somebody above saw; the yellow pads on favre. noticed that last week as well.

in baseball news, two things about the yankee game today, one small thing and another big thing. brett gardner was wearing low pants today, i think yesterday as well.
the big thing: paul o’neill, michael kay and david cone were the announcers today, in the 9th inning they had a 3 or 4 minute conversation about stirrups. supposedly the rays 1st base coach (George Hendrick) was the man who brought long pants into style. everyone always wore stirrups and he really didn’t like them so started wearing his pants below his ankles. anybody know if this is true? they both seemed pretty confident about this information. oneill and cone both talked about on their original franchises (reds, royals respectively) and how there were rules about the stirrups and how there actually had to be a certain amount showing and if it wasn’t enough, you could be fined by the team for it. they also mentioned at time instead of real socks they wore hosiery or like stocking type things is what they seemed to be talking about. very interesting i thought that one person seemed to have started the whole low pants thing. i personally think he should be banned from baseball for taking stirrups out of style. anybody agree?

p.s. this might have been mentioned at some point in the past year, idk

    BREAKING NEWS!

John Madden was talking about Cleveland Browns tradition, and he just said,

“Not only that, but the Browns are the only team in the NFL without an emblem on their helmet.”

Has anyone ever noticed that before?

This is how I remember Hendrick wearing his pants in his playing days…
    link
They may have crept lower than that as time went on, but he can’t be blamed for the pajama pant phenomenon. I wanna say Derek Bell was the first guy to really go baggy, but I could be wrong.

Noticed during the Buccaneers/Falcons game that the Tampa Bay coaches headsets have a decal of the Buc’s secondary logo (as seen on the jersey sleeve). Sorry no pics and I have not seen it on any other teams headsets either today.

Yeah, but I assumed that since they had the jerseys and everything (and since they were apparently supposed to wear them game 2 yesterday) that they’d actually wear them. Who knows.

Anyone notice the “This is a production of the National Football League…” Video at the halftime of the games. I am sure that I am late jumping on this one, but the clip is sort of a history of the NFL logo with the shield morphing from the one with the stripes, to the curly-cue letters, to the one they use now. It’s a great way to intro the new logo.
anyone have a link to it

Have you ever noticed when players wear their jerseys without shoulder pads in pre-game, the jerseys always fit snugly? i have an old notre dame authentic jersey. i bought it online and was disappointed how tight it was with the extra space for the pads. it looked ridiculous when i wore it, so i just hung it on the wall

I saw that too. I think he was adjusting the air in the bladder of the helmet. There are a few inputs that you basically pump like a basketball. I think he peeled the stripe back to gain access to the air holes.

Regardless of the brand of the football pants, they are all essentially the same material. Whenever you mix a light color (white, grey, etc…) and sweat the pants will appear to be see-through. Especially when combined with a white jock strap underneath. Obviously this isn’t a problem with dark pants. I’ve noticed Florida, Texas, and a variety of other warm weather schools experience this problem on almost a weekly basis. Think of it as a trade off to eliminate the old, heavy style of pants. Maybe not quite as appealing to the fan, but 100 times cooler and lighter.

Actually a buddy of mine wants to get football pants to wear because it would be a more extreme demonstration of loyalty to his team. Hoping they won’t be transparent.

Can you please address the atrocity that was Virginia Tech’s Orange Effect Jersey vs. Georgia Tech? Maybe through education, we can avoid these horrible mishaps in the future.

The word is Butch is partial to the navy blue. As an aside, all of the nonmainstream sports teams at UNC use navy blue as a big part of their uniform designs.
