Where There’s Smoke, There’s Dana Quigley

Paul’s smoking athletes story was a while back on Page 2, but here’s one from Saturday. Golfers are the easiest to catch on camera, obviously. I think it’s because, while golfing is a very nice skill, it doesn’t take that much athletic ability to do it. You don’t have to be fast or tall or strong, necessarily, and you certainly don’t have to curtail your smoking to be good at it. It’s just a nice long walk with a pause every so often to whack a ball around. Plus, this picture makes Dana Quigley look like the prototypical country club shark — visor, golf shirt, leather skin and all. — Bryan

I’ve been really disappointed with this year’s offerings of golf attire at The Open. You can usually count on something like Sergio’s all orange number from last year. C’mon, Ian Poulter, don’t disappoint today.

With the news about the Oklahoma Thunder breaking, I have a quick questions about Paul’s rule that all good team names end in ‘s’ – do the the Red and White Sox get a reprieve from that rule because the ‘x’ replaces ‘cks’? And why is it that I hate when people write ‘thanx’ but I find ‘Sox’ endearing?

From yesterday’s comment linking the Carolina Hurricanes third sweater confirmation. link

They mention that only the Devils/Red Wings/Hurricanes have not had third sweaters. I can’t remember the St. Louis Blues ever having one.

i take back my previous comment, i guess there was a cross over of in 97-98 when transition from the odd red look to the bland black look. link

Dude… there’s no black on any of those jerseys.

I’m disappointed to hear the rumors about the OKC Thunder. Sounds like a WNBA team. I personally thought the OKC Outlaws was the best choice so far.

The White Sox are wearing early 80’s-era throwbacks (the orange and blue striped ones) today against the Royals. The Royals, unfortunately, aren’t wearing ANY kind of throwbacks.

When this happens, is it because the visitors are too cheap to participate, or does it have something to do with the home team? To me. it’s always more fun if BOTH teams wear throwbacks at the same time.

Hopefully somebody will have a screen grab, but Cincy manager Dusty Baker is wearing a French Foreign Legion style cap today with a red flap in the back. Hard to tell if the flap is sewn into the regular cap or if it’s just tucked in, but it’s … uh, an interesting look.

Really, the Seattle Sounders as best uni in the MLS? I think you should look around the league a bit. I really like FC Dallas’ look, and if you are looking for the best modern color scheme outfit, I say go with LA Galaxy or Colorado. If anything the new Seattle kit has to win some sort of award for least imaginative. Seriously, is someone with the Seahawks organization not going to say something?

The White Sox are wearing (overly baggy) throwback jerseys today in honor of “Harold Baines Day” in Chicago.

It still seems like it would have been better to have KC wearing throwbacks too…

The White Sox did go the extra mile and got specialty batting helmets (dark blue with orange brims). They also have the uni number on the left pants pocket area too.

These are nice touches, especially when so many other teams half-ass it.

From the better late than never file, I wanted to address this comment from the ’79 World Series entry from Thursday:

On the seventh bullet point of the article, the picture linked with the phrase “Shorter names,” what’s up with the back of Kison’s hat? I know it’s WAY too early for an MLB logo to be showing up. Is it bad stiching? A Pirate logo? A Star? Bad image?

On the older pillbox hats, as I recall, there was a seam down the back of the hat, therefore the stripes didn’t go around the hat. They stopped on either side, near each other.

Kison’s hat in that photo is most likely just torn at that seam. What you’re seeing is the stripe torn and just hanging there.

For Matt and those who like me espouse the “Look Good, Play Good” theory…

This morning for Sunday softball (three 5-inning games) I had a little TBTC Day of my own to 50’s Pacific Coast League: Navy San Franciso Seals hat from Ebbets Field Flannels (love that hat with its white button and eyelets), white tee, baggy white pants with Navy pins (properly bloused, of course) and Navy 4″ stirrups.

Went 8-for-10 (including a shot that damn near de-horned the third baseman, a double and a triple). Been awhile since I hit the ball on the head 10 straight times like that.

And most of these guys are young enough to be my son, too. (smiles)

That—and 80 cents—will get me cup of convenience store coffee, but it sure felt good.

Agree about those Oriole BP jerseys. Some MLB BP jerseys aren’t really so bad, but those are really chitzy looking.

Just not something a major league team should…oh, wait, it’s the Orioles, isn’t it.

What NOT to wear, even around the house, much less in public. Stopped at Wal-Mart on way home from sofball for bottled water. Guy walking toward me in parking lot was wearing an early 80’s powder blue actual Twins Hrbek jersey…and a current Giants game hat.

    Ummm…. No.

No offense, but if you think those jerseys look good, you have some terrible taste… And this is coming from a guy who likes orange and maroon.

You say those are the best, I say those are the worst. Just because they’re different doesn’t mean they’re better. If I’m watching the game and the color of the jersey gets burned into the TV set because of how fugly they are, they are not good jerseys. This green and the Dynamo orange fit that billing perfectly.

A good part of Oklahoma is known as “Tornado [and thus “thunder”] Alley.”

These are nice touches, especially when so many other teams half-ass it.

Putting aside the baggier cut that all uniforms tend to have these days, the only differences between the 80’s unis and today’s throwbacks are the regular belts (as opposed to the red elastic belt that the 80’s unis had) and the players not wearing red shoes (probably too hard to get the players to go red for one game, although I could have sworn I saw Nick Swisher in red shoes). The letters for the players’ names are the current font, although in navy, and the number font is that of the Yankees. Those are pretty close to the Medalist fonts.

Given the general “remove the excessive logos” mentality in this group, which I wholeheartedly support, I thought you might get a kick out of this little video.

Our local station does a “cry baby of the week” about sports figures behaving badly. This week he took aim at Fox for part of the All Star Game pre-show.

a great sunday seeing Harold Baines and Ozzie Guillen in those 1983 Sox uniforms!

    a couple things:

    – AJ did have on the red cleats today and it matched superbly.

    – AJ also had the slightest bit of stirrups showing as well. easier to see while he was batting.

    – the caps were officially made by New Era. I saw a couple upturned caps in the dugout with the headband tags clearly visible.

    – the training staff (Herm, etc) had white polos with the blue”batterman” logo on the left chest.

    – nice to see grey undershirts with red trim around the neck! (instead of black trim)

    – at first I thought the v-neck depth was 1″ too deep on these majestic unis, but again probably just the baggy-ness factor at play again.
but looking at link wearing a turtleneck underneath, maybe the V-neck depth wasn’t so off after all!

    – the starting pitcher today for the Royals is the son of Floyd who actually played on the link team!

when most teams turn back the clock, they opt to use whatever batting helmets would otherwise be worn, but both seattle and cleveland went the extra mile and wore the appropriate headwear (mariners using the royal/golf combination and the indians busting out the home, red brimmed helmets) the tribe event went one step further, and instead of simple wearing the current red brimmed home caps, they opted for a true throwback cap with the much larger chief wahoo. (compare link to link)
as has seemed to be the trend this year, good uniform selections pay off, (just ask joe skiba) as the indians won the battle of the al’s two worst teams.

DC has good jerseys, LA has good jerseys, and I’ll even get excited about the Crew. I don’t dislike the new Sounders jerseys, but the NY/NJ Red Bulls and the Dynamo jerseys are pretty unfortunate.

Doesn’t matter that last year’s Michigan team didn’t turn out to be one of their better ones. Appalachain State had no way of knowing that at the time.

Then again, they voted for Adrian Peterson. LOL.

Timberlake’s doing a surprisingly good job, btw. Had no idea he could be so funny.

    so…they were what, 60?
Um, no.

But the truth is, I do have half dozen or so pair of cleats older than most of those guys.
Mine are Wilson.

Noooo…don’t have any steel cleats any more.

seeing kevin everett walk onto the stage during the espys gave me chills, i live in buffalo and i was at the game when he got injured. To see him walk again is a miracle.

Holy crap! Not only were the Orioles wearing some hideous orange jersey today, Kevin Millar had lampblack on that resembled the Ultimate Warrior! Sorry, can’t find a pic.

although i was hoping for another espy for the g-men and more j-tim memphis jokes, i must say seeing mr. everett has turned an otherwise insipid and horrid espy-love fest and comedic suicide turned political statement into a somewhat watchable show

    /good for kevin everett

    A little late, but…
Screen grab requests from tonight’s (20 July) ESPN telecast of Red Sox at Angels.
Examples of massive Santana-esque sleeve piping fraying on at least a couple of Angels. See Vladimir Guerrero (especially during his at-bat in the 7th inning) and Francisco Rodriguez (in the 9th, natch).

    Following up on myself…

We can also see the frayed piping in link.

    You know…

I appreciate people talking about hockey on this blog when it always seems to be the furthest thing from anyone’s mind, but we already know of at least six confirmed alternate jerseys for next season.

Philadelphia had already confirmed an orange alternate jersey for this coming season at the time that they debuted the Rbk jerseys.

Boston had narrowed their choices to four styles of alternate jersey sometime in the winter, and will have an alternate for next season.

Carolina and St. Louis have, in the past three weeks, confirmed their alternate jersey inclusion as well.

Montreal will be wearing three alternate jerseys next season to coincide with their 100 year anniversary.

Edmonton has also mentioned that it will be wearing an alternate next season as well.

There were 18 NHL teams that applied to have an alternate jersey design with Rbk Hockey. Whether or not they all get them is another story, but there will be at least six teams that do. My guess is that the announcements will start in August for these alternate uniforms.

The Wings did have a third jersey- back in the early 90’s, they experimented briefly with a black jersey. And it looked great. Every once in a while you’ll see an old-school Bob Probert black jersey at a Wings game.
From yesterday’s comment linking the Carolina Hurricanes third sweater confirmation. link

They mention that only the Devils/Red Wings/Hurricanes have not had third sweaters. I can’t remember the St. Louis Blues ever having one.
The fashion jerseys made by Starter and Nike when they were in the hockey world in the early-to-mid-1990s are what you’re remembering. They also had a baby blue Red Wings jersey, but neither of these were worn on the ice.
