On Beavers, And Their Place In Uni History

beaver

By Bryan Redemske

FYI: Paul’s got a non-uni piece up Page 2 today.

Meanwhile: Back in the good ol’ days — say, 1603 or so — the beaver played a key role in the rapidly expanding fur trade of North America. Without this humble, wood-nibbling creature, there’s no way the white man would have taken over the continent. A beaver pelt was good for all sorts of stuff … like trading for whiskey and tobacco. Actually, one pelt was good for one pound of tobacco or four pounds of lead shot. A dozen pelts hooked you up with a rifle. And 15 beavers meant you were a 17th-century pimp.

At Oregon State, five pelts means you play baseball. The two-time defending national champion Beavers have five different jerseys, effectively ending late-night laundry duties on road trips. You likely remember the old-timey contrasting-color placket that debuted in February, but here’s a quick look at the rest of the rotation. Thanks are owed to Hank Hager, the Oregon State baseball SID, for putting up with me for the last two months. I wanted to dig a little deeper, but the coaches are busy trying to win another championship or something. Their priorities are clearly out of whack.

First and foremost is the elimination of this logo. That’s a very good thing.

Here’s what the Beavers wore as their standard home uniform for the past few years. Despite a university-wide logo rebranding (aiming more toward this), the cream is still around. And though Oregon State is a Nike school, the baseball team wears Wilson uniforms and uses DeMarini bats, which are made by Wilson.

The new white uniform is pretty cool. A similar black jersey — worn with sweet striped stirrups — is also in the mix. The numbers on both, however, are morbidly obese.

The gray pinstripes, which looked like this last year (crap is also a good way to describe it), now look like this. Much better.

And, finally, there’s an orange jersey. At least they don’t have an orange hat to go with it. Or a white one with sublimated flames or something. Schools don’t do that, do they?

Now over to Vince, for more beaver jokes … and the ticker.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Chris Souder thinks he has found the perfect shoes for Paul. … Elena Elms passes on these photos from the Virtual Museum of University History at UNC. … Not sure this has been linked to not or yet, but someone went through a pretty detailed comparison of the old and new Portland Beaver uniforms. Even if it’s old news, I had to get one beaver mention in, right? (Thanks to Nick Oelke). … New football uniforms coming for the University of Kentucky (Thanks Shannon Knight). … That’s it for the ticker today. 15,347 emails on the ESPN smoking column, but only a handful of helpful ticker notes.

Good news in the uni world as these hellish looking things got eliminated and won’t be seen again until next season. I blame all the injuries COL had on the Bettman Stripes. They’re gulity.

MIT (the “Engineers”) features a stylized edgy-looking beaver as its athletic mascot. To be sure, MIT athletes might not compete favorably with, say, OSU on the various athletic fields. After graduation, however, things, how shall I say, “change” in a direction favorable to the MIT folks. Regardless, MIT deserves some props for doing the beaver right.

I’ve been dying for both one of those and one of the Hawks jerseys from that movie. I saw a kid with a Gordon Bombay Hawks jersey at a BC basketball game and went nuts looking online to no avail.

Let us know if you find one!

Even though they think adding black is an appropriate “tweak”, I’m glad to see Kentucky won’t be simply copying Buffalo’s uniforms again next season.

It doesn’t get any lower than that.

  • Jay | May 2, 2008 at 10:00 am |

    From the UK jersey story:
The big stripe down the side of the jersey and pants has been replaced with a smaller, more traditional set of diagonal stripes around the rib cage area.

I didn’t know diagonal stripes are “traditional.”

The new uniforms will also feature more black trim, particularly around the sleeve and collar areas.

That’s what UK needs, more black. (sigh).

It’s been mentioned every day, but you may have missed it – regular writer Paul Lukas is away, and Bryan is filling in (with help from Vince). We’re all very appreciative that there is a daily post at all, rather than shutting down the site for the week. For someone who claims to value the site, your criticism is extremely misplaced.

Here we go again! Do you ever think maybe to ask Wade if the ticker is ALL he reads? Maybe he skims and doesn’t have the time to dive into the posts/comments with as much detail as some of us do.

These OSU uniforms were outstanding. The new ones are not nearly as good.

As for this guy, I am willing to look past the cap brim and jersey buttoning issues, because the pants are just about perfect (a little baggy, hiked just below the knee) and those stirrups are beautiful.

The Cubs should bring this back. It looked great in 1933.

Caltech (yes, they have sports teams, amazingly) is also the Beavers. Unfortunately, this is the best shot I can find of their unis this year:

I was always taught that baseball pants were to be put on inside out and upside down. Meaning the elastic at the bottom does not show. It seems that now even players who wear high pants do not wear them correctly as most of the pictures showing stirrups today have visible elastic cuffs.

The interlocking UB has been used for quite some time but it was upgraded (my term) in the mid 90s. It’s a school-wide mark, as opposed to the Bull and Buffalo word mark that are exclusive to athletics (and also add black to the equation). Those graphics have yet to make it on the uniforms.

Okay… I know I may be in the minority (or at least Bryan’s doghouse) but I love the interlocking OSU hats. The cool element in the logo, which you can’t see in the picture, is that there are orange baseball stitches inside the O. Furthermore, with the stupid and unneccessary rebranding of the school to “OS”, it’s one of the last remaining nods to the days of OSU.

And with the rebranding, why not this?

While I’m personally not a huge fan of the modern “OSU” logo, I wouldn’t have nearly as much a problem with it if it wasn’t combined with a “classic” looking jersey. You either go classic, or you go modern. If you tried to mix the two in professional sports, you’d have an aesthetic disaster on your hands.

And with the rebranding, why not this?
wait…you said this is “interlocking OSU“…maybe im not understanding the term, but isn’t this interlocking?

the first one is like ‘run-on’ (for lack of a better term), no?
Perhaps, Connected? Or slightly cursive?

Ray King could be described as: a wee bit more than slightly rounded!

your not going to find any online…your best bet is to get customs done from a supplier like Athletic Knit or something. I have the logo saved on my computer, email me if you want it.

now…does anyone know where to find striped stirups online????? I have emailed Paul but gotten no response.

No screencaps yet, but Slovenia’s goalkeep vs. Canada today (IIHF World Championships) was wearing some pretty sweet vintage pads. All brown and everything. The TSN commentators were making wisecracks through the whole game.

As per Kek’s suggestion, I went and got this book from the library yesterday.

However, my keen skills of observation have noticed a discrepancy: The game in question:Game 7 of the 2001 WS was played at The Bob in Arizona, thus an away game for the Yanks, thus making the picture inaccurate.
Would this be better, then?

I admit, after “next to last” I got kinda lost. Math wasn’t my strong suit.

Michigan and Oregon State have nothing on Florida State. I will admit to not having pictures, but there are two whites (one with Seminoles on the chest, one with a right side interlocking FS,) a white pinstriped, a white vest, an all gold for Sundays, a garnet top, greys identical to the whites (meaning one that says Seminoles and one with an FS,) and a grey pinstriped vest. There are also vegas gold and garnet BP jerseys.

Could the author be referring to the last game the yanks won in the series. That being game 5 at Yankee Stadium?

Totally disagree, stirrups were meant to make it look like guy were wearing colored socks, so wearing them at the Paul Lukas-level isn;t in teh spirit of stirrups at all, and looks only slightly better than solid socks, IMO. Sock/stirrup go as follows:

    Ridiculous
    Lame
    Good
    Better
    Best
well, like everything else, it’s personal preference…one thing i agree with paul EXACTLY on is how to wear one’s stirrups

but that could be because we’re almost the same age (42 & 44) and grew up during a time when that’s the way stirrups were worn

REAL old schoolers prolly prefer the 40-50’s look and all you younguns (i don’t trust anyone under 30 anymore)…well…you got them there new fangled tastes

    doesn’t mean you’re right however ;)
You couldn’t have said it better! I’m 25 for the record. I embrace uniqueness, top button undone, high cuffed, hat titled, flipdowns, wristbands, alternate colored batting gloves, whatever….but not when you look like you just instantly lost 60 pounds on the field.

Hey I grew up when Ken Griffey was coming up. All the “old guys” giving him crap for being “The Kid”, hat backwards, looking at homeruns etc. I say N***a Please! haha!
