Trainwreck, or Just a Collision?

slide

At some point in the last six months, weren’t we promised the banishment of those damn red Pirates jerseys? Seriously — wasn’t that a winter fan-fest sort of thing?

Well I’m here to say, “What the HELL? Why are they back?” And if the end of the line wasn’t supposed to be until after this year, I’m here to say, “Can’t you just stop now? The Pirates’ season is over already. The next five months are merely a formality.”

I’m sorry, Buccos fans. It’s true. — Bryan

Brian, it’s refreshing to see an early riser like myself. The red Bucs jerseys look like bad bowling shirts.

When did Jeff Kent grow a beard and get traded to the Phillies? Seriously, those red vest things have to go. I can’t imagine any Pirate fan dropping link for one of those things.

If they want to wear a vest, they should go link route.

I agree that those uniforms are terrible, but cut us some slack. Us Bucs fans usually hold out hope until the beginning of May

Xavier Nady doesn’t deserve to wear something so ugly. They should trade him to the Mets right away. As punishment Aaron Heilman and Jorge Sosa should be in the deal!

Thanks for reminding me, Phil. I love looking at his projected totals for the 2008 season: 0 wins, 34 losses (or $426,470 per loss). But the glass is half full – he brought the stirrups back.

So this is a bit random, but I was browsing through the website for “670 The Score” (Chicago’s main sports talk radio station) and I went to their pro shop to look at authentic jerseys for the Cubbies. I noticed that the jersey they had as an example was that of link. Pierre hasn’t played for the Cubs since the 2006 season. I find it curious as to why there is even a picture of Pierre’s jersey, let alone it be used as an “example jersey” while trying to sell them.

After 15 years and multiple double-digit losses by mid April, these Buccos are looking at the 1962 Mets as the standard to beat this year.

Maybe it’s like a “clearance” center? I mean, the “jersey” his name is on barely counts as being connected with anything the team actually wears (white background behind the walking bear, totally different font, for starters), so people probably don’t pay any attention to it anyway.

Pirate management ought to ask themselves:

What would Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell, or Ralph Kiner look like wearing those unis?

As a Mets fan, I have to say this:

“Jorge Sosa” is the Spanish translation of “Doug Sisk”

I am a Mets and sort of a Pirates fan (I’ve been to their games, and actually know their starting rotation, and other junk “real” fans should know) guess I like the underdog thing… but fuck me those red floor rags are garish.

So, will the Rams “Georgia” memorial patch be blue on the road unis, or will they have a white football with the signature? Personally, I like the subtlety of the color on color football. It might be a tad too big, but the lack of color contrast keeps it from being too garish.

The whiet out in Pittsburgh could have something to do with the fact that the Penguins play in the IGLOO. That is all I could think up but I am a blonde Italian.

As a lifelong pirates fan, and thats saying something since I was four years old when some joke of a left fielder who shall remain nameless couldn’t throw out Sid Bream, I gotta say I despise the Friday night red jerseys but I’m a big fan of the Sunday pinstripe alternates.

I believe that’s for the inaugural season at Nationals Park

I just saw the American Experience documentary of Clemente this week; gorgeous period shots of the muted yellow batting helmets with black bill and the stripes of color on the stirrups. They even looked good in the blandness of Three Rivers. To go from that glory and tradition to . . . That? Any wonder the Pirates are suffering so at the gate?

Anyone else see the irony of one day’s topic being the joy and challenge of tracking down every appearance of the O’s all orange unis, followed by the by the next day’s topic being a general bitch about the similarly hideous red Pirates vests?

Will unitologists 35 years from now try to document every appearance of the red vests?

I recoiled twice during the Phils game. Once at those safety vests and the second time when the Phils blew a 6-0 lead.

Also, a quote from ESPN.com comments section on Favre being the cover athlete for Madden 09

“I never even thought about having Sean Taylor on the cover… Picture it: Sean Taylor holding the ball by his hip in his left hand, looking up and pointing to the sky with his right hand… gives me chills just thinkin bout it….

On the subject of the Bucs, just…don’t get me started. I actually do like the red-billed cap that goes with the awful red vests, but I’m not buying one because I feel like wearing Pirates gear makes me an accomplice to the travesty the Nutting family continues to trot out every spring. Okay so Pirates’ red jerseys are NOT pretty. But what’s up with Zach Duke’s undershirt in this pic? The sleeves are black but the rest is like charcoal grey? Is that what they all wear or just him? Perhaps this points to an ‘underlying’ problem in the Pirates’ clubhouse? Even if they ditch the red vests, will they still (or at least Mr. Duke) have the unnecessarily two-tone undershirts?

A better “memorial” patch would show Georgia on her back with her legs in the air…since that’s how she became the owner of the LA/STL Rams…!!!

The only thing worse than that red Pirate jersey is the black underbill on the Philly cap. Why can’t light gray remain an option? When one is only allowed a black underbill, one is only allowed a hat with colors that go with black. And black does NOT go with everything. The thought of that black underbill with the royal blue button on top is hideous. Tantamount to the Mets current (yet longstanding) mishap. Those black underbills don’t look good with any combination. Can I still find gray ones? You know what I’m sayin. See what I’m sayin. Know what I’m sayin.

All the teams have undershirts that are grey on the torso with team colored sleeves. It’s more noticeable with the vests, but sometimes you can see the grey near the neck of a loose jersey.

re: Pirates’ red vest. Never can decide which song they should break into: “76 Trombones” or “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.”

Gotta be one or the other.

Some alternative jerseys – have that look that says: “We’ll try and damm color combo just to sell a few more at the concession stands……. this is definitely one of them.

On a totally separate subject – every year at about this time I say a little prayer , that the Kansas City Chiefs will not change their uniforms. Not that it’s the greatest jersey – but here was the late 60’s/early 70’s kind of cool new color combo – There were the Chiefs , Atlanta Flames and Atlanta Hawks. For me it was the Flames that as a kid fascinated me. Now with the exception of the Chiefs ,those teams added black and over time, the red/yellow was either phased out (Calgary Flames) or completely changed the Hawks> But the Chiefs remain, oh they occaisionally change their pant color – and they have an easy to excuse to add black – afterall the outline of the arrowhead, and here’s hoping for another year they resist those dark forces.

Did Keyshawn Johnson get dressed in a dark closet this morning? I like the jacket and the tie, but the shirt just kills it.

I want to see the Jets take a punter just to see the looks on the faces of the fans at the draft.

i actually pictured them being a lot worse than they turned out. they’re pretty bad though. the unnecessary piping, the red side panels on the black jerseys, the black stripe on the white and red jerseys, and the cat stracthes on the pants are all awful. at least the garish adidas 3 stripe pattern isn’t all over them.

Bearcats pants make it look like they had a little trouble fleeing from…a bearcat, maybe?

Or is their new team mantra, “We’re Bearcats. We scratch each other’s butts.”?

Sorry, I’m just amazed at the wrongheadedness that emerges in uni design, more so than ever these days. Like Oregon’s techno pattern that looks like tiremarks. “We’re Ducks. So fast we get run over crossing the highway.”

Willie did wear this link and link in the 70’s. I’m sure he’d have looked right at home. And so what if its not one of their original colors. I think this is a fight we’re not really going to win ever again.

Seriously, I like that idea, an actual red JERSEY thing.

Oh, and the state of the Bucs, I think they need a major shakeup of a trade. Get a pitcher who doesn’t give up four runs in the first inning for Nady. They’re not even playing him every night. Why they aren’t playing Mientkiewicz more, I’ll never know.

Seems to me teams don’t get that ADDING a color doesn’t autpmatically make things better (this year’s Celtics, for example). “One Color and White” is a dying combination, and has one less practioneer with Celtics adding alternate unis. Colts, Maple Leafs and Red Wings are among the few pro teams that hold onto that classic look. I suppose pros think it’s too “collegiate” (Alabama, Penn State, Texas, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Michigan State, et al).

You don’t know anything. Most people in Pittsburgh hate Penn State. Sidney Crosby requested the whiteout to see how it would look. They probably did white because (a) they had been giving out white towels the entire playoffs; (b) gold would look too much like a steelers game; and (c) black would look terrible. So they come from a 3-goal deficit to win during the whiteout – looks like it was a success.
