Congratulations! You’re Going to the Hula Bowl!*

Football

*Please bring your own belt.

To be perfectly fair, Tulsa’s Paul Smith probably decided to rock the blue himself. None of the other players seemed to be wearing non-matching belts. Note also, the nose bumper, which is supposed to say “Canes” but appears to just say “Cane.” When your eligibility is used up, apparently you only worry about yourself.

In completely non-belt-related happenings, if this guy played basketball, I’m guessing he’d go with these. — Bryan

Actually, since Tulsa’s nickname is the Golden Hurricane, doesn’t it make sense that the bumper would say “Cane” instead of “Canes?”

Tulsa is the Golden Hurricane – singular, not the HurriCANES. Why? I have no idea. They should be the Golden Tornado or something that actually occurs in Oklahoma. So, strangely, his nose bumper is correct.

This was probably hashed to death last night, but the refs in the GB/Seattle game looked infinitely better than the refs in the Jax/NE game. Those black pants are a farce. (Old news, I know, but it had to be said again.)

Frankly, the crew in the Sea-GB game needed to wear the black pants, even though they have been hated on these boards.

now…i think we call ALL agree there was no need for link to wear link in new england

Unless the Giants go with the red jerseys, I guess. I would be floored if the ‘Boys go with some variation of the blue jersey. If they lost, the decision would be dissected forever.

BTW, what is the NFL policy regarding alternate jerseys in the playoffs?

I was at Marshall’s the other day when I saw a discounted Chiefs jersey with a player I’ve never heard of. Anyone know who this Priest Sew7oh guy is?

I don’t think you’ll see the Giants alternate “reds” anymore this season.

I’m almost sure the Cowboys always wear white at home, especially in the playoffs. Which means the Giants would wear their “home” jersey for the second road game in a row.

As far as alternates, I couldn’t see a home playoff team choosing something other than what they would normally wear, if only for superstitious purposes only. And possibly because if they lost, whoever chose the alternates would take a thumping in the media for their choice.

Ok, I’ve had enough. The NFL needs to do something about those god-awful neon green gloves the seahawks are wearing. Yes I know the color is in the teams color palette, but damn. No wonder they can’t win playoff games, those gloves are blinding them.

Didn’t the San Francisco 49ers rock the alternate unis all the way through their playoff run for Super Bowl XXIX? It was the year NFL was celebrating being 75.

And about the Seahawks, the lime green gloves are about the only thin I approve of in their uniform. That mud-green-gray color scheme just isn’t conducive to spirit or excitement. It’s the overcast sky of NFL uniforms.

Which I guess fits Seattle, but still.

Those Hula Bowl jerseys look like friggin’ practice jerseys. Also, who the Hell thought it’d be good to play football in Hawaii in black? We may get on Nike for being bad but New Balance has proven that they’re no better.

A golden tornado is a dust tornado heavy in mica thats appears to shine as it spins. A golden hurricane is a very large and low spinning golden tornado, usually significantly larger than a tornado and quite more destructive. When Tulsa decided to change their mascot in 1922 they decided upon golden hurricane because at the time Georgia Tech was know as the golden tornadoes. It is singular because the players actions act as one force, as in one hurricane.

Um, Hawaii’s home uniforms are link, jersey and pants.

Judging from past Cowboys-Giants games, the Cowboys will wear white of course and the Giants blue. Usually when the Cowboys play in the Meadowlands, the Giants will wear red.

the 49ers wore those all year, though, and that was considered their standard uniform for that year. also, the cowboys will be rocking their usual home whites. the giants will be in blue. i’m almost 100% certain that the NFL forbids alternate jerseys in the playoffs. although as we’ve seen with jax the last two weeks, it appears that teams have a choice of pants – the jags wore the white on white earlier in the season and i’m not sure which pants, if any, were designated as the standard road pants.

My sentiments exactly – it was my prediction for the NFC Champ Game after the draw was settled, just hope I can stay awake long enough to watch it.

I stand corrected. They all say Cane. Sorry — I was getting a bit punchy last night. It was funnier the way I said it, at least.

And the belt thing — everybody else had either a white or black belt on. Paul Smith appeared to be the only one in a team-colored belt.

It looks like in the picture at the start of the article that he is throwing an nfl style football. Well at least its not the normal ncaa version.

i thought the kai were all wearing link belts…which would of course make sense, since they were wearing green tops

also, it was hard to tell link belts the aina were wearing, since they rarely kept their shirts tucked in

for some guys their own personal belts fit best. being a former equipment manager….we found some things are better when they fit right. and it looks like Belichick has 2 different swaetshirts one with a hood one without.

I noticed this yesterday at the packers game, but I’ve seen it before. The NFL Equipment logo on Green Bay Jerseys has been moved around on certain jerseys to complement different jersey tightness or fit styles. Compare the link style with the link styles on different link. Just thought it looked funny with the logo stuck in between the numbers.

Yesterday Paul asked for a photo of Matt Hasselbeck getting his link by Green Bay’s #77 link . The yahoo news photos are from a second after it happened, but you can clearly see Hasselbeck’s belt in Jenkin’s hand.

i think that’s his link, not his belt…look in the bottom of link

on a different note, and i know it’s been discussed here, but i hate the way teams have truncated the shoulder stripes over the years

    link vs. link

No, I’m talking about his jersey number being around his waist. Because of the front cut of the jersey, the only way to fit a gigantic ‘HULA BOWL’ is too move it down seemingly below the chest. The result is like two feet between his neck and the top of the number. Jersey numbers seem to be getting link. It looks pretty stupid if you ask me.

Did anyone notice the link in this picture isn’t wearing black sock, it appears to be some sort of underarmor type pants. The guy is going for the real leotard affect instead of just a mimicked one.

Bryan, will you have an update for us on your conversation with Dallas Clark about the flag on his helmet? We’re eagerly awaiting that info!

Anyone else notice some of the chargers have a black uniform number on the upper straps from their chin straps? Rivers, Jackson, Turner…i noticed it on all of them, i never did before! Crazy!

I noticed those too. PS- that last TD pass from Rivers might be one of the best passes I have EVER seen. Perfect.

Didn’t see very much of it yesterday, but it has been prevalent in the past.

This must be your first time listening to the WW1 broadcasts this year, because those sponsorships have been in place all year, as well as the Rolaids Moment of the game. That kind of sponsorship has been a part of sports radio broadcasts since the dawn of sports radio broadcasts. It’s like saying that a commercial is “branding creep”.

It might be the first time I caught a WW1 show. The Heinz Red Zone was really too much. I guess within the confines in Pitts, it’s OK givene the environment. And I don’t really mind the naming of buildings to help defray their cost. But tagging it on to a mention when there’s no connection makes no sense. I can see the Rolaids Fireman of the Year I guess, as an example. I;ve worked in radio since 1980, so I’m well aware of branding. These two examples seem excessive.

In my opinion, nothing is excessive in radio. Did you happen to catch that the 2 Minute Warning is sponsored by OnStar? Or the Barbasol Close Shave Instant Replay?

I miss the days when we had the Rams on the station I work for, they always had the Copyright Disclaimer sponsored by a legal firm. The baseball games we carry in the summer have the calls to the bullpen sponsored by US Cellular and the changes in the lineup by Meta Bank, “For every life change”.

That goes beyond tacky and goes straight to complete money whoring. If you don’t bother going for a sponsor that at least can be linked to the thing being sponsored, it’s not worth it. At least the OnStar sponsorship says something like “Car troubles can give you no warning”.
Did anyone notice the link in this picture isn’t wearing black sock, it appears to be some sort of underarmor type pants. The guy is going for the real leotard affect instead of just a mimicked one.
That’s actually pretty common, there are a load of guys who do (or have tried) that instead of tube socks. They wear UA or Nike compression tights with white ankle socks. Samari Rolle, Chris McAllister, Terrell Owen and Randy Moss to name but a few. Some even wear the tights with the tube socks rolled down to get that bunchy Flashdance effect that some guys seem to love.

Well you know that TO is a maniac, maniac on the field ;)

If anyone’s DVRing the game, Cory Webster is wearing a black armband — clearly visible late in the 2nd quarter when he dropped that easy interception.

I’m off to meet a friend at a bar for the rest of the game.

Can anyone get a screengrab for this one? It appears as though R.W. McQuarters is wearing some sort of kids band-aid on his face. At first glance, it looked like Spongebob, but it’s tough to see.

That might be a bicep support attached to his pads by a strap, he’s been wearing it for a few weeks now.

Dang links never work for me…

Also dig Webster’s six-point chinstrap, awesome!

It looks like Justin Tuck and Antonio Pierce have the same new jersey cut on that Toomer is wearing, with mesh all the way up to the collar in back….no pic though.

anyone see cowboys #98 @13:26 in the 2nd qtr? only one blue stripe on his left shirt sleeve. didn’t get a screen grab…

Can’t imagine that it hasn’t been mentioned before, but the ref in the Mac/PC commercial is wearing two different styles of Northwestern-striped socks. The one on his left seems much more abreviated.

Jessica Simpson sure “sucked” the life out of the Cowboys Super Bowl season aspirations alright…Wow…weak kneed syndrome has some merit once again…Tony you fool.

Tony Romo just went from the next Brett Favre to the next Tim Couch..(Heather Kozar sweepstakes winner).

The only hit more devastating than from the Giants D is a good sack from Oh J Simpson…

Four nice unis playing next week:

Giants vs. Packers // Throwback heaven.
Chargers vs. Patriots // Well a classic “almost” great uni game.

Also very cool that poor little Eli Manning is playing next week and the human commercial Peyton is NOT. Good for you Eli…Peyton is certainly the most over-hyped QB/athlete” of our generation…if he did not get the Super Bowl bye last year (by facing Wrecks Gross Man)…he’d still be waiting for his first Super Bowl win…

and having the younger maligned Eli into the NFL Final Four is a nice change…Funny how no Marty Schottenheimer means auto entry in the Final Four for the Chargers…

In that Marge Switzer interview, she said that the packers would not be using the ‘C’ patch at all, and that they were even asked to return the box of patches to the team office. But, in the Seahawks game, Favre was rockin’ the C. Anyone else catch/confirm this? Maybe a special playoff team-solidarity thing?

pretty sure that would look like some very creepy hands trying to grope their chests.

I was at Marshall’s yesterday in the Bronx when I found the best “oops!” jersey ever. Check this out.

Actually, Marshall’s and TJ MAXX are great places to find jerseys at bargain prices, especially for kids. Sure they’re past seasons models, but still pretty cool. I’ve found Chad Johnson (both black and orange), Chad Pennington, Larry Johnson, Randy Moss (Raiders), Reggie Bush, Wayne Chrebet, Adam Vinitieri (Patriots), Joey Harrington (Lions), and, for me, Takeo Spikes (Bills), Joey Porter (Steelers), and a Ben Roethlisberger Miami University with stitched numerals and nameplate ($14.99).
Normally all we see are Favre jerseys here, so not too bad.

In the Giants R.W McQuarter (25), Aaron Ross(31), and Corey Webster (23) were all wearing the black armband.

I just assume it was a Sean Taylor tribute.

Found a picture of Webster wearing the arm-band on the espn photo section for the Giants game but cant get it to link properly.

Looking at the photos of McQuarters it doesn’t look like he is wearing one this week but I know for a fact that Ross did.

Was it sweet or what to see the Cokeboys lose today. Yet another year with no playoff wins for all those bandwagon fans!!

By the way, did anyone notice Greg Ellis faded sleeve stripes?

And now back to the Cokeboys hate. This explains how exactly how I felt growing up in DC with all the a**hole Cowboy fans…

FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD AND HOLY! NO!!!!
The Bulls have the SICKEST (and one the CLASSIC) uniforms in the NBA and under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should they EVER change them. The City of Chicago would flip if that were to happen.
It’s bad enough the uni’s are made entirely with that Fruitcake dazzle material.

I’ve noticed he’s been doing it since last season. I don’t remember him doing it as a Bear.

1 – Nobody blamed Jessica Simpson last year, yet the Cowboys’ season ended the same way then as now: with a mistake off the hand of Tony Romo. There is no correlation, but humans and sportswriters (they’re not always in the same Venn diagram) like to try to find connections between discrete events to make sense of the universe. Again, there is no correlation.

2 – Wayne Larivee on WTMJ said that, as opposed to the “appointed” Green Bay captains during the season, playoff captains were “elected” by the team, which would give them time to put the official Cs on the jerseys of those so elected.

3 – The 49ers’ throwbacks in 1994 were not their “standard” jerseys. They were their throwback uniforms, and every team had one that year to commemorate the league’s 75th season. But while teams only had to wear them in Week 3, the 49ers had success in them and elected to keep them. They were 3-2 but only lost once in their last 14 games including the playoffs.

4 – The Cowboys do not ALWAYS wear white at home, but most of the time. They wore link at home against Green Bay this year. I do not believe they would deliberately wear their traditional blues at home, especially in a playoff game.

    TD Giants!!!!!
I noticed that, unlike the other Giants, Toomer’s nameplate is rounded at the top rather than on the bottom — as if it were upside down.

I lack screen-grab capabilities, but any idea what those couple patches on Tony Romo’s arm were today? They looked small like Nicorette patches or something. He had two of ’em on one arm above his wristband, one above the other. I didn’t notice them until the 2nd half and I think one was gone in the fourth quarter. Anyone else notice this/know what they were for?

As an aside, I’d like to thank/curse Uni Watch for changing the way I look at sporting events. Now I’m constantly hunting for these little nuggets and then racing to my computer to see if anyone else has noticed them. I feel like a treasure hunter and a nerd at the same time. And I love it.

I’m sure he knows damn well. Why else would you plaster a WIDE RIGHT on a Norwood jersey? Betcha the back has a NO GOOD inscription along with the LNOB.
Honestly, those jerseys are so similar. The main indicators are the sleeve and neck patterns (blue-red-blue=Giants; red-blue-red=Bills), which are not easily visible from far away.
It looks like in the picture at the start of the article that he is throwing an nfl style football. Well at least its not the normal ncaa version.
In NCAA all star games which feature all seniors (those with no eligibility left) they use an NFL ball because they technically no longer player college football, and the NFL is the next step for some of them. These all star games serve as a scouting opportunity more than anything.

a good number of the Cowboys players wore blank (white) nose bumpers in the game today, while others had ones that said ‘Riddell’ or ‘Cowboys’. I’m not a ‘boys fan, so I only noticed this today, anyone else catch it?

He has a Scott Norwood jersey on. That’s classic! From a distance, it could also appear to be a Phil Simms jersey, but it’s definitely a Bills jersey, and Norwood was #11, hence the “WIDE RIGHT” on the front also.
