Washington Syracuse Football

College football is in full swing this weekend, providing us visual feasts such as this unfortunate explosion of the color. We also got a chance to see how bad the “sports bra” uni’s look on Oregon State during a live game. —Vince

I knew a syracuse picture would be here today.

Looks like the orange in the jersey doesn’t match the orange in the pants. The lighting on that field is always bad too.

My wife pointed out that Syracuse looked like a group of convicts picking up trash on the side of the road.

I did like the 75th anniversary SEC patches that were on the jersey’s of the LSU/Miss St. game. Small and simple.

Marquette is switching from Nike to Converse in a deal with Dwayne Wade’s (MU alum) brad. The article states they’ll have 4 new uniform sets next year, including one that incorporates some kind of old-school look.

This really isn’t that big of a deal. Nike owns Converse, so Marquette really is not even switching companies. They’re just switching to a different division.

I am from Syracuse and I HATE these uniforms, I dont understand why the new Athletic Director had to change our old uniforms. The Navy blue uni’s with the orange helmet and pants were just awesome. He has slowly been trying to change our uniforms into the USC style since he arrived from there. Why change a good thing when you got link.

those syracuse uniforms are horrible i know they are trying to look oldschool but what kills me the most is the white names just leave them off

The white lettering for the names looked totally out of place on the Syracuse uni. Even worse than link lettering used to.

    Old school? link.

After beating the Russian kids 4-2 today to take a 4-0-0 lead in the Super Series, the Canadian juniors return home on Tuesday for Game 5.

Canada will wear link in Winnipeg on Tuesday.

I could almost tolerate the Cuse uniforms if they had at least white pants. Now, they just look like week-old apricots with numbers. ack.
LOVE THE ALL ORANGES UNIFORMS!!! LOVE THEM!!!!
Finally, I’m not the only one who loves these uniforms. I love the no white trim. Wish the numbers were still on the helmet, though.

Watching Colorado – Colorado State. CU is in the all-black version of link.. one cool thing – the wordmark is gold on the front, and the nameplate lettering is also gold, creating a bit of a link.. The nameplate letters are italicized but (properly) centered to the jersey rather than centered to the number. Very clean look actually.

Colorado State is in all-white, and without nameplates, which I’m fairly sure is a new development.

Damn you beat me to it. Kennedy id the first Yankee I’ve seen wear stirrups in like forever since Boggs I think.

I kinda wish Converse would make an update of the All-Stars. A modern basketball shoe. I wear black high-tops, and I always get comments from people saying they wore them to play basketball back in the day.

I can’t even imagine how horrid that must have been on the ankles.

Watching ECU-Va Tech… The entire VT offensive line is wearing matching orange knee braces. Is this a common thing that I’ve just never noticed?

The UW-Syracuse game was playing on a TV behind me last night at a deli. I glanced over my shoulder to see the score & I did a double-take looking at the Syracuse uniforms. I couldn’t believe it. Not even a white outline around the numbers. Hideous beyond belief.

I live in Portland so I’m used to the Ducks’ ridiculous uniforms. Looks like the Beavers are trying to outdo them with those really peculiar jerseys. Sports bras, indeed.

How do these things get approved?

Same piping as Florida and Nashville, but looks much better with the colors changing on each side of the line.

I like the Syracuse jerseys. Everbody seems to be giving them a hard time, but the only thing I’d change is get the names off the back of the jerseys and go with white pants. But all in all I think they’re pretty cool. And I’m a traditionalist on jerseys.

I DIG THE ORANGE UNI’S AS WELL!!!
    Long live SOLID COLOR UNIFORMS!!!

Watching Appalachian State beating Michigan at the half on Big Ten Network (DTV 220).

Noticed App State has the rounded name plates that Lukas mocked in his ESPN article.

What I didn’t like about the ‘Cuse uni’s was that the oranges didn’t seem to match. The helmets/jerseys/field logo all seemed a slightly different shade of bruised orange…

it seems as if nike was planning on miami having name plates on the new jersey, they look very empty and the new piping looks odd without name plates up top.

They did try to modernize the All-Star about 10 years ago. I had a pair.

Syracuse wore orange jerseys and pants for the first time since Nov. 6, 2004 at home vs. Pittsburgh, a 38-31 double overtime Orange win. The team also wore orange jerseys and pants in a 41-7 win over Temple Nov. 8, 2003. The origin of the idea for the orange jerseys, along with the block “S” and “NY” helmet logos came from athletic director Dr. Daryl Gross.

Florida’s jersey looks worse off than they usually do. You have a Nike logo on one side, the logo on the collar, the gator logo on the other side with the SEC 75th patch ON TOP of it. They look like a NASCAR bumper.

Pretty sure U. of Miami used to have those also.

I hate Wyoming’s uniforms. And I still don’t get why they have brown and yellow uni’s and a white helmet. Looks like ass.

I like monochrome unis as much as the next guy, but that’s just too much orange. Ugh.

Misfit uniform sighting yesterday at the Metrodome, where the Twins wore their death shrouds – I mean, link – for the first time in ages.

The Badgers are indeed wearing red on red today. My source from Madison either lied to me, or was left out in the dark. I hate it personally

Nice gesture in the UEFA Supercup between Sevilla and AC Milan on Friday. Players from bothclubs wore “PUERTA” on their jerseys, in addition to the standard black armbands, in honor of Antonio Puerta, the Sevilla player who collapsed on the field and died of heart failure last week: link

Ack! The Badgers are wearing all-red (red unis & red pants). Now I’m rooting for a Wazzu blowout today, for the same bad luck effect as the Badgers had with those “W” shoulder unis from the 90’s (worn in the game they got blown-out by Colorado).
Oh no- Wisconsin in the solid red unis.
Bonnie Bernstein just announced that the players decided to always wear this look at home, as a metaphor for being “solid”.

I wonder what their metaphor is for “eye exam”.

Illini breaking out the orange unis for the first time since Zook took over. As much as the Nike Template is generic and annoying, i like the Illini uniform and this orange looks a lot better than the previous version

The game has gone final- Appy State, 34-32.

Quite possibly the biggest upset in college football history, or at least one of them

The Syracuse jerseys are nice. The colors are disgusting. Retina-burning.

But those UW jersey’s look darn classy.

Can someone show Syracuse these Illini jerseys, so they know what orange jersey’s are suppose to look.

Someone PLEASE tell me you have a screen grab of the best visual feast today…. Martin Rucker (TE) of Missouri has a mohawk that is the perfect color and style replica of the Missouri helmet!

I LOVE THIS TIME OF YEAR! So happy that college football is back. I can already feel the fall weather… life is good.

Nothing that a sizeable loss to WSU couldn’t take care of. Assuming the current score holds up.
The Badgers are indeed wearing red on red today. My source from Madison either lied to me, or was left out in the dark. I hate it personally
I just e-mailed Mark Peeler (football equipment manager) and asked him why he lied to me and said the Badgers will never wear red on red like the NCAA ’08 football game indicated. I will get to the bottom of this… you can bet on it.

As for Wisconsin’s red pants, it is the first time I have been ashamed to be a Badger fan. Another reason you don’t let the players chose what unis they wear.

I like the red/red combo of Wisconsin! My question is why would they deceide to wear that combo with another team that carries red as their primary color? MAKES IT HARD TO WATCH THE GAME.

I vaguely remember this discussion last football season, but humor me. What the heck are the Georgia Tech colors anyway? For the longest time they wore dark blue and gold, now it looks like black and gold. You can’t be both, right?

great grab of ian kennedy’s stirrups!! actually I belive the last yankee to wear knee-high pants with stirrups and sanitaries was scott brosius for the entire ’98 season.

interesting to note that the yankees have a knee-high mandate in all their minor leagues, but only kennedy chose to keep his pants at the correct height. joba chamberlain and phil hughes have opted for the sunday slacks look.. shame!

a quickie on syracuse; as brutal as the all-orange was, the lack of helmet numbers killed me!

I just checked it out, ND’s unis do look incredibly dark. Wisconsins look fine, Illinois which i see in person 6 times a year look normal color, etc. so i dont think its our TVs, maybe its NBCs cameras…

I know they’re purple, so Paul hates them, but Northwestern has tweaked our uniforms this year. Basic template is the same, but the numbers have gone from gaudy and hard to read to very traditional block letters, white with a black outline on the purple jersey. The numbers harken back to the 1995 Rose Bowl-era black jerseys, which many fans (including myself) long for.

The new uniform numbers (not a great shot in this bunch)

linkas they are called (after Northwestern University).

p.s. Wisconsin looks horrible in all red, same with Ill-annoy in all orange. Same applies to Northwestern when we go all purple.

Sorry, Illinois is not all orange. The orange jerseys and helmets are so vivid in HD, I mistaken thought the pants were orange at first channel flip.

I played college football, I was a center. This was in ’01 last time I played though. We were given braces from the team and our coach wanted us to wear them, we weren’t told by the NCAA we had to, but if Coach I caught you with out them, you were running laps. That was a team rule then, or so they made it out to be, not an NCAA thing.

Those black patches on the ACC jerseys are the Virginia Tech memorial patches.

And Lloyd Carr should take the decals off the helmets, much like Fresno State and Colorado have done within the past ten years whenever their team stunk the place up.

Oh, wait . . . those aren’t the Tech patches, but both Georgia Tech and Wake appear to be wearing a single, small black horizontal stripe on the front of their jerseys. Peculiar . . .

happy labor day weekend to all the Uni Watch crew! Here in Buckeye nation, we are having a blast!!!!!!!!!!

I’m pretty sure that Ohio State changed their nameplate typography in the offseason as well. It looks vertically smaller and horizontally thinner than previous seasons. Sadly, I’ve yet to find any good shots from today’s game to do a closer comparison.

Any team that picks a huge helmet letter over helmet numbers clearly has style issues. They’ve redeemed themselves a bit with the black cleats/white laces combo though, I just love that.

Why doesn’t their basketball team wear navy on the road? I know they wear gold, but it is such a light gold it looks more like a home jersey.

Georgia Tech’s official colors are Old Gold and White, though over the years the gold has been several different shades…I liked last year’s mustard throwbacks. They’ve worn navy blue or black over the years, including last postseason. I like the shiney gold lame as well, which debuted back in the 80’s during basketball glory days. The basketball team has worn navy from time to time…like during thier Final Four run with Kenny Anderson in the early 90’s.

Notice today RB Choice had a different style “2” on his jersey than the rest of the team…another dumb Tech move, like the abundance of patches on the jersey front. But a great win against those great ND uni’s!

This is kind of funny, because the App. State jerseys are the template Oregon State used last year.

Having just graduated from OSU, I am pretty darn ashamed of the new unis. I thought last year’s were decent, aside from the black on black look.

Damn kids and their lousy taste in fashion. As a Badger alum who was looking forward to a BCS season, this development has soured things tremendously. The solid color uni is the teal of the ’00s. Blech!

Granted, I’m watching the Cal v. Tennessee game at work on a 52″ plasma in a somewhat dark room, but the Cal nameplates appear to be a different shade of yellow than the jersey. Are they actually darker? Or is it some effect from the layering of the yellow?

It may be un-Uni Watch approved, but all-purple seems to work, I saw a high school game today, and the winning team wore basically that outfit (just substitute Tornado for Raiders on the front), and they rolled, 42-21.

Watching USC-Idaho, and I noticed that the Trojans seem to have one of the more uncluttered back-of-helmet landscapes in the NCAA right now. Just an American flag decal and the Danelo memorial decal-that;s it, no numbers, no manufacturer’s warning, no NCAA logo. Its refreshing.

I noticed that too, but in my non-HD-ness, I wasn’t sure if that was the case. Notre Dame’s jersey and Cal’s helmets both look black on my 32 inch SD’er.

Wisconsin successfully ruined their beautiful ensemble with red pants. I was hoping Washington State would win so Wisconsin would feel jinxed and ditch the threads…

Also of note, Tennessee returned to their pre-2005 helmet stripe (as someone mentioned earlier), which I think looks good. The Vols are the only team I know of with that thick of a stripe and for some reason it works for them.

There is no such thing as ‘too nitpicky’ on this site.

Even as a Wyomingite, I have to agree. I am not a fan of the yellow, and I know they are pushing the “celebrating the past” thing, but I liked the prairie gold better. Plus, the field still has the lighter shade of brown and the prairie gold so that looks mismatched too. Let’s hope it’s just a one year deal and not a permanent change.

As a fan of both Syracuse football and the color orange, I can tell you that these unis did not look good at all. Orange, in my opinion, is an accent color. You cannot have an entire uniform composed of orange! Bring back the blue, guys!

Can’t believe nobody’s commented on this yet, but Auburn was wearing some link in the game last night vs. K-State. Most of the players had some link on their sleeves as well. Awful!

Wisconsin’s all red uniforms suck!!!!. Their red jerseys with white pants always look classy. I guess the Badgers have to change style to be noticed. Boo! rjs from Mad Town

SYR…..looked alot like convicts picking up trash…but I like the Washington look…not bad at all!

UW looks o.k., i think, and thanks to Paul for letting us Dawgs enjoy our link in Uniwatch. doubt he’ll be as solicitous this weekend when the Huskies host Boise in their purple sweaters (and gold pants/helmets), but at least we don’t have to endure the blue field.

Syracuse’s unis are freaking link, SU alums~! just because McNabb isn’t there doesn’t mean they aren’t the Orangemen
