Sunday Open Thread

Either Marcus Giles thought that taking off his pants would help Bud Black win his argument, or he’s taking after his brother.

Seriously, I love all the uniform readjustment that has to happen after a good brawl. Shirts need to be tucked in, pants need to be fixed, and I think I saw one of the Cubs yesterday have to completely reloop his belt. — Vince

Zambrano started removing his belt as he came running on the field…

i guess he was going to take someone to the wood shed…
Isn’t that Marcus Giles not his older brother?
Ya, I’m pretty sure that’s Marcus.

Last night, Gerald Laird of the Texas Rangers was wearing a gray catchers mask against the Reds, compaired to the link one he normally wears. He doesn’t go hockey style, so it was just the actual mask part that was gray, still a blue helmet. No pics of it yet.

Yes, that’s Marcus, formerly of the Braves.

Carlos Zambrano was in the clubhouse changing jerseys in the bottom of the fourth inning Saturday when he heard a fight had broken out between Derrek Lee and Padres starter Chris Young.

Sorry about the initial misidentification of the Giles brother.

The belt thing cracked me up because I really thought he was going to try and use it as a weapon. I got some scary flashbacks of my youth.

This is from yesterdays comments about Roger Clemens and being self-obsessed. While not totally uni-related, check out link in the year 2057. It’s quite amusing, at least for Red Sox fans. It’s outright sad for Yankees fans.

Would have been a lot funnier if they actually wrote some jokes instead of having the old guy just yell “rocket” over and over.

The fact that Brian Giles walks around the clubhouse naked isn’t the most disturbing part of that article Vince links to. How about the revelation that Greg Maddux pees on rookies?

I think Maddux needs to remember what happened to R. Kelly for urinating on rookies.

Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant!

OK, this isn’t really uni related but still, this is the last place I’d want someone to make a mistake-

University of California Division I schools caps:

UC Irvine: Interlocked UCI
UC Riverside: Interlocked UC
UCLA: Yellow B similar to the Red Sox “B”
Cal: Yellow “C”
UCSB: Yellow “SB”
UC Davis: U C D locked in a left to right cascade.

All the teams have a navy cap except UCLA, which is a lighter shade of blue that I can’t define.

Felix Pie of the Cubs wearing big smeared eye blue today. For Father’s Day probably.

I’m watching the Red Sox-Giants game, and they showed Manny Delcarmen sitting in the dugout. It looked like he had a temporary tattoo of a blue ribbon on his neck. Screen capture, anyone?

Watching Cubs/PADs – some of the players seem to have “Dad” stitched into those light blue armbands – I’ve seen Mike Cameron, Jose Cruz Jr, and Carols Zambrano so far, while others seem to have blank ones on Derrek Lee, Jacques Jones.

The US Open had a short piece today about Forrest Felzer changing into shorts in a portable toilet after the 17th hole of the 1974 US Open. Apparently the USGA changed their rules after that requiring players to wear pants…interesting.

How bad are Aaron Baddeley’s pants today? He looks like he is wearing a tablecloth!! Golf gear is awesome.

>How bad are Aaron Baddeley’s pants today? He looks like he is wearing a tablecloth!!

I disagree. The Euros / Aussies / SAfricans gear are top-notch. I probably wouldn’t want to watch everyone wear it every week, but I do wish more guys on the tour would not be so plain.

Also, at the top of the coverage this afternoon, Johnny and the other guy in the booth took a look back at Miller’s 63 in ’73 and then both stood up to reveal some superbad B/W checked pants. Or were they houndstooth?

“Pants of the US Open” really should be a blog entry next week!

Dont get me wrong…I love the pants. They are so bad that they’re good.

Went to AAA Charlotte vs SWB Yankees last night. Something we found a little unsettling was the site of Yankees uniforms, with numbers like 3 and 4 on them!

I know it’s minor leagues, but a Yankees jersey with a 3 on it now looks plain wrong. I would think it wouldn’t bother me at all if it were still the SWB Red Barons… but a Yankee jersey just seems unnatural.

Thoughts?

Do the Padres ever wear their road sand jerseys? We gripe about the Mets overdoing the alternate jerseys, but what about San Diego?

Interesting, but yeah I could see that looking vey awkward. I was playing MLB 2K7 last night and I realized they put a random number on the 1st and 3rd base coaches jersey and one of them had a 3 on and it looked weird

When they don’t wear their sand unis it makes me very happy. Also, what is that sleeve patch?

I believe its baby blue for UCLA, but they like to refer to it as “Bruin Blue”. Do you happen to know what is on the back of them. i know Cal’s is the Script CAL with “Baseball” Under it.

The sleeve patch is the “Swinging Friar,” a staple logo in the past, but now currently only on the alternate, if I’m not mistaken.
The Padres should wear their sand uniforms to be unique. Nobody else has non-gray away uniforms. Not that I am enamored with them, but I believe that baseball jerseys should match the pants. In the end, you cannot spell San Diego without sand.

We also call it “true blue”. Best color scheme in sports, IMO.

Oregon State Road jerseys are ruined by the white OSU on them. Love the grey pinstripe, but the letters and numbers ruin them.

Here’s what Paul said about it last year in a ticker item:

Yesterday’s comments section included a note about Rangers catcher Gerald Laird wearing a white mask on Saturday. You can see a screen-grab link, . This is the latest example of Mizuno, which is Laird’s equipment outfitter, providing a catcher with two different masks — a colored one for home (where Laird looks like this) and a gray-ish one for the road. Another catcher who does this: Victor Martinez (home, road).

I didn’t copy all the links but check it out in the ticker of link post.

Watching the Rockies game. The powder blue ribbon on the purple is.. well, just be glad its me and not you.

Why the ribbon? I get the blue part, but the pink ribbons are (supposedly) specifically for breast cancer awareness. Is this prostate awareness? Manboob awareness? What am I missing here?..

Seemingly prostate, yes. Still seems like a reverse-Title IX trick rather than an original idea, but can’t knock the cause.

2 notes- first, maybe I’m crazy but having watched 3 games today the armband looked like it was just plain blue but on the Milwaukee-Minnesota highlights their armbands had dad stitched on them. Did all the teams have the stitching and I just didn’t notice until then?

second, watching Men In Black and the scene at Shea when the spaceship was in the air shows a quick glimpse of the Jackie Robinson patch.

Some news at the Tigers-Phillies game.

When Carlos Guillen (#9) pinch-hit in the 7th inning, he was wearing a #8 batting helmet.

Fernando Rodney pitched with his cap tag sticking out.

More baseball news: On the recent Sports Illustrated cover, several Mets are wearing last year’s hats and some are wearing the 5950s.

Ian Poulter still takes the cake when it comes to golf clothes. Jesper Parnivik comes to a close second. I agree that outfits at the U.S. Open should defiantly be a subject this week for Uni Watch.

Well, they don’t have the “NY” logo or ‘NEW YORK” on them, right? They only look like Yankees jerseys from behind, and there are plenty of teams with pinstripes and that block font in the world. I’d hate to see thema force their minor league affiliates to ban certain numbers just because the big club has.

im trying to create a cool logo to put on a shirt at cafepress. does anyone know what computer programs i need to accomplish this? thanks

I also got the feeling there that it wasn’t quite a Yankee game there. Don’t get me wrong, I think that it is a really nice stadium there, but of all the times that I have been to the Bronx, Lackawana County PA doesn’t cut it

I also noticed that the shaft of his driver was colored to match the hot pink of the lettering on his visor. Can’t say I’ve ever seen such gratuitous use of hot pink on a golf course.

They favor the alternate blue over the sand because it is one of those relatively new fangled “Cool Base” unis. Over the first 2 weeks of the season, they wore the navy alternate nearly twice as much as the white and sand respectively.
Now, however, they seem to wear the white at home because Majestic has made them a white CoolBase uniform.
My guess is that a sand cool base uniform would be a little more difficult to make, especially trying to match the mesh arm pit gussets.

Has anyone actually worn one of these? Or can attest to their magical moisture wicking ability that makes them so popular with the players?

Bubba’s driver always has a pink shaft, it just wasn’t for today. It must work for him he leads the tour in driving distance. Pretty good for a good ole boy from Bagdad, Florida.

You are correct, sir. Somebody needs to fix him up with Paula Creamer of the LPGA, another big fan of the pink. (No pun intended)
