Am I the only one bored to tears by the “No. 1 jersey” ritual? It’s essentially the same damn photo again and again — so scripted, so predictable. Zzzzzzzz.

I’m just glad that the Browns had two jerseys available. How bad would Brady Quinn’s day have been if he was standing up there with nothing but his suit?
The titans mixed it up last year putting 10 on VY’s Jersey
Here’s Vince Young link

I would say the liklihood of Brady Quinn remaining #10 at Cleveland are very high. Currently the Browns have no #10 on the team. I think the last #10 the Browns had of any relative merit was link I do hope the lord has sent us a link from Notre Dame.

Sorry for the double post but the Spam Blocker is really acting up today. When did three relevant links become too much?

Anyway, here’s Calvin Johnson and his link

I just pray that Quinn ditches the Great Gazoo helmet. He’ll look like the Great Pumpkin playing for the Browns.

And at least the drafted players don’t put the #1 jersey on over their suits. I think it would be hilarious if they handed the players a helmet to put on instead of a baseball cap.

Did anyone notice that Brady Quinn was the SECOND draft pick by the Browns (in the first round, …I know) and yet, there he is, holding the ubiquitous #1 jersey…

Joe Thomas was off fishing somewhere, so I guess Brady Quinn gets the jersey.

I was watching the opening to the second day of the draft and they showed the top prospects doing exercises and one of them was JaMarcus Russell wearing a shirt with a BIG HONKIN’ SWOOSH on it.

I agree that the No. 1 jersey ritual is boring, but what would we replace it with? Here are my ideas:

    1. The player is presented with a necktie in team colors, so he can replace the one he’s wearing. Then we’ll find out if the player tied his own tie or if his mother/girlfriend did it.

    2. The player’s new teammates jump on stage with a bucket of Gatorade and drench him. The Gatorade would be in team colors — red for the Cardinals, the blue kind for the Lions, purple for the Vikings, etc.
    3. The player is presented official pom-poms by the team’s cheerleaders. Maybe he also runs through a gauntlet of cheerleaders just like during the introductions at a game.

    Anyone else with ideas?
I agree that the No. 1 jersey ritual is boring, but what would we replace it with?
How about the team announces its pick and then we move on to the next team without having the players walk on for photo-ops? These guys haven’t even signed contracts yet! Just announce the picks instead of treating the draft like it’s the fucking Oscars.

Was Russell so sure that he was going to the Raiders that he wore all black? Or was the wardrobe a coincidence?
Was Russell so sure that he was going to the Raiders that he wore all black? Or was the wardrobe a coincidence?
I must say that peaked lapels on a single-breasted jacket is a sharp look.

I am ok with the FIRST pick getting the number one jersey (i.e., Russell), but that’s it. Everyone else should be shuffled on and off the stage in an orderly fashion with no pomp and circumstance. Ok, maybe the top ten should get a little pomp, but no circumstance.

Quinn gets the #1 jersey because Thomas in fishing, but also because Quinn got taken in the first round. That’s my guess. Plus, the poor kid hasn’t had any of his dreams come true (Heismann, National Championship, 1st pick) as recounted countless times–throw the dog a bone.

Oh! I was going to say, as I did yesterday, ditch the hat-wearing thing. They get all geeked up in really nice suits (though not always nice-looking), then plop those stupid hats on their heads. Ugh.

Lastly, JaMarcus Russell sets the bar high for sartorial splendor. Let’s see if anyone else can match.

No, really, lastly, God, that Viking jersey is hideous–and the cap isn’t any better.

P.S. What struck me about the jersey Russell is holding is how immense it is. If I wore that thing, it would be dragging on the floor.

Man, it is difficult to make a baseball cap look good with a suit, but Jamarcus Russell pulled it off beautifully.

Of course, after looking at that, I scrolled down to see what I missed yesterday and nearly threw up…

The new cover for NBA Live 08 is out and Arenas is on the cover, and what’s plastered right on his jersey (at least on the photos on ESPN)? An adidas logo! I’m really tired of adidas having the contract with the NBA already, they’ve put their huge logo all over the replica and swingman jerseys, bring back Reebok and Nike! At least those logos weren’t huge and gaudy.

    link.

The inherent issue with the all black is that the shirt, tie, and suit never match. The black is either a different fabric, has more sheen, or is a shade off. Look at Russell’s shirt and suit…they’re off. The tie is enough of a contrast to pass the test.

Well, it is easier when everything is black. Just my little plug for all-black all-the-time.

True. It’s the many layers of black. It’s a beautiful thing! Embrace black, my brethern and, um, sisterhood. Look at JaMarcus Russell and see how harmonious all-black can be.

    Second plug for all-black.

Minna, the word you seek is sistren. I beg to differ about the all-black most strenuously, what an awful combination, or rather lack of combination.

Breaking news: St. Louis pitcher Josh Hancock died in a car wreck today at 29. There will probably be a uniform patch.

Wow. That really is a word. Cool. I am now programming it into my memory.

That’s ok about the all-black disdain. Like I said, me, schuby, and maybe two other people are down with it. Looks like Bud is ok with it in certain situations.

I will defend link (except for the middle one with the silver X) until the day I die. In fact, if I were to be buried, I would wear all black.

Plus, it’s another opportunity to post a pic of my favorite rugby player, Ma’a Nonu, otherwise known as the guy on the right.

Tonight’s game vs. the Cubs has been postponed.

Condolences to family, friends, and teammates. :(

I’m sure you guys probably heard, but yesterday D.C. United played with maroon jerseys (keeper wore orange) with Virginia Tech logos in memory of the shootings. It’s pretty tough to find good pics of MLS games (hard to believe, I know) but there are a few here: link

they also had a momebnt of silence at Yankee Stadium. the announcer said it was because he used to be in the Red Sox organization.

The Cardinals have used classy, simple patches to memorialize link and link and I am expecting something similar in the days to come. Ironically, that picture of Kile wearing Buck’s patch is the only one I can find of the JFB patch.

    I gotta tell ya…

that maroon jersey with the red and black DC United logo looks REALLY GOOD.

if they kept that permanently, I think it would pretty much rule.

That jersey was supposed to be for Joe Thomas. Since he was on a fishing trip, that jersey was never used. Hope that clears things up.

I was at the Nats-Mets game last night (all 12 innings of it) and it appeared that Ronnie Belliard had something on his left knew, possibly blood. I can’t find any pictures of it, but I’ll keep searching.

There will probably be a moment of silence in every stadium. When DK died in 2002 every stadium held a moment of silence for 57 seconds (his uniform number). And yes, Hancock pitched for the Red Sox in 2002.

Being that I was never into anime, not in the least. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I don’t hate the Wizards gold jerseys and black shorts. I don’t think they’re as bad as everyone cracks them up to be, it’s something different and I sort of like it in a way.

With all due respect, no thanks.

The Twins announcers brought up the Hancock death because Nick Punto was a minor-league teammate of Hancock’s. Very sad.

Brendan, thanks for the link. I’m going to have to use sistren from now on–although it reminds me of link, which is in no way related.

For the draftees who are not in New York, but still have a camera on them, where do they get the team hat? DO they have a cap of all 32 teams standing by? This was really bothering me yesterday.

RIP Josh Hancock. We may never see another baseball glove with the word “Cock” laced onto it.

Being a lifelong Cards fan, it sucks to have to deal with another loss. Losing DK was bad enough. Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t we also lose DK in ’02 during a Cards-Cubs series?

I’d imagine that’s the case, I’m sure there’s some cases where they know who they’re going to be going to so they get that specific hat.

The gold and black Wizards unis are terrible. Pick one color and go with it. Basketball unis look terrible when they’re mismatched. The only unis that look good mismatched (and, indeed, should be forced to be mismatched) are football unis. As has been mentioned many times, unitards (this means you, Seahawks!) are dumb.

Also, black should be, at best, an accent color. I’m glad nobody wants to be cool and like the Raiders anymore (who I blame for the whole black phenomenon in the 90s).

They might have a range of hats for when they’re predicted to go. For example, Olson to the Bears might have had a Bears hat, a Colts hat and whoever had picks 33-37 or something.

And soccer? I can go either way, seen good and bad of each.

Article on Cards not wearing new BP hat was at the bottom of the page that mentions the scary scenario that occured when DK passed. Odd how ominous it seems in retrospect.

Remember a few years ago when the Lions drafted Roy Williams in the first round, then traded up to draft Kevin Jones in the first round? Well, someone thought it was a good idea to link and pose for pictures together (sorry for the tiny pic). I remember thinking it was really dumb at the time.

Although I guess technically Kevin Jones and Brady Quinn are somebody’s number one pick – but the original owner of that pick traded it away to another team.

I wasn’t really paying attention, but Olson and Stanton appeared to be together at Agent Drew Rosenhaus’ house in Florida. If this is the case and many of his clients (or are those the only 2?) I could see Rosenhaus having all 32 on hand.

I first saw those unis, and thought “Sweet Jesus, since when did the NBA allow middle school teams play?”

Has anyone else noticed the button inconsistency on the MLB jerseys? – Some jerseys have 2 buttons above the lettering; Some have one above & one at about the sternum. Does anyone know: Are these different models? (they’re all Majestic, I think) – If they’re diff. models, does anyone know if there are any other differences btwn the models, or, is it all just a team preference? – It seems to be a “team preference” rather than a player preference (everyone on the team seems to have the same model) – Unfortunately, I don’t have links & can’t really remember specific games (I’ve noticed this in the past week). As a vague reference, I mostly watch the Cubs; I think their home unis have one button above the lettering; I think their road jerseys had 2. I think the Cards home unis had 1 above.

Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this & If anyone knows more?

A number of people mentioned this yesterday.

Wizards black and gold–I don’t like it. Can you believe it? It’s the gold. I don’t care for it at all–I would always choose silver over gold.

The Phoenix orange unis are blah. I am going to say they need to make the orange brighter and change the accent to either black or white. I know it’s counterintuitive to say make the orange brighter, but if they are going to wear such a bold color, they have to go link with it.

Just ask link and link who really know how to bring on the orange.

Consider that football, professional and collegiate — except for NCAA D3 — is mostly irrelevant as far as “reality” is concerned, except for the uniforms. [On the other hand, I’m a geezer, if not an “old fart,” who remembers leather helmets, jersey sleeves to the wrist, and the single wing.]

Regarding dressing in all black. I feel it looks good if the suit, shirt and tie are all black, with different textures and patterns. It’s similar to dressing in different shades and textures of blue. But, black suit + black shirt + bright colored tie = UGLY. This should never, ever, ever be done. Not everyone can pull off all black, but it can look nice.

Ok. You Red Sox fans out there. If you ever get the chance to meet Manny, please yank on those link of his. I know, it’s just Manny being Manny, but they annoy me no end.

as for the incessant parade of No. 1 unis, i think the NFL should opt for something more realistic… every draftee should instead be required to hold up something of substance: like a college transcript… or their rap sheet.
Maybe we should just hand the MC duties over to Howie Mandell… make the whole thing a giant episode of “Deal or No Deal.”

Can’t you see Mandell, standing along side the likes of Quinn or Russell… asking if they want to take the contract and signing bonus being offered by the man in the booth… or continue to open briefcases. (Hey, a handgun! How’d that get in there?)

He also had a few marijuana-related incidents if I remember correctly, including that traffic cop incident where he had a joint in his ash tray or something. Moss was worse in terms of legal problems when he was younger, now he thinks he’s entitled to whatever he wants or something because he had a good run in Minnesota on the stat sheets. If he doesn’t turn around the attitude now that he’s on a quality team and doesn’t learn to respect the staff around him, we’ll see him in a Cowboys uniform soon enough.

However, the fans are still shelling out big bucks to watch these teams play. The players owe it to the fans to do their best. Otherwise, they get fired. Kinda like the real world.

I want one of link. Not only would I look good; I could get mistaken for a ref!

i read that article a while ago and i forgot that the ORD reference was the dramtic conclusion. plus im a nerd and i found the whole thing interesting

    Doh!

To add insult to the Mavs loss and the fact that I thought RATM’s concert would be broadcast online when it is, in fact, not I totally forgot to try and bid for one of the Houston Dynamo’s special VT memorial jerseys.

    Anybody get a bid in?

nif, it was interesting, but I have a one-track mind. I really wanted to know about ORD, and the article kept teasing about it.

jake in #88, I saw that, too. I’m sad because I liked the old unis. Oh, well. I suppose I will have to wait and see the new ones before making up my mind.

OK, Paul, obviously this touched a nerve with you. I was just trying to be funny, but based on the response to my post, no one was in a joking mood.

For what it’s worth, I find the whole draft broadcast concept laughable. Consider this: Viewers waste hours watching what exactly — absolutely nothing. They’re watching decisions being announced!

the only fun thing i think about the nfl draft is to watch all the stupid fans overreact about players they either know nothing about, may not even be close to being as good as they were in college, or may not even make it through training camp.

Not surprising, but some of the Mets are wearing last year’s cap. Carlos Delgado is one of them….

Brady Quinn was holding a #1 jersey up because is was first round. There would be only one #1 jersey used if it meant 1st pick and that would be for Russell
