Sunday Open Thread (kinda late, sorry)

Floyd Mayweather, Jr., wears pink gloves in his Saturday-night bout against Carlos Baldomir. Also worth noting: the ridiculous gladiator getup Mayweather wore when entering the ring (if he really wants huge pecs and a six-pack, why can’t he just take steroids like everyone else?).

In the Jaguars-Titans game, the Jags are wearing their “official” home unis (green shirts, white pants), while the Titans are wearing the white pants with their white shirts (first time I’ve seen that since their ’02 home opener against the Eagles). Could it be that the Titans are going to follow the lead of the Seahawks, wearing all blue at home and all white on the road?

Niners in their retro alts today. Word is #16 will be behind center, too—-just win, baby.

  • Raul | November 5, 2006 at 3:13 pm |

These cold weather ref shirts look even worse than the short sleeve version. Are they leather or some kind of cheap gortex? The short sleeves have that idiotic collar that looks like a bow tie, but the long sleeve seem to have the collar up so they look like priests. This is just pathetic.

No self-respecting gladiator would be caught dead wearing that boxer’s faux-armor in the Colosseum … he’d rather fall on his own sword, wearing only his birthday suit, right in front of the Vestal Virgins.

The 49ers need to ditch their current uniforms and go back to the basics. Current uni is way too busy. Their real uniform is classic. Maybe have thinner pant stripes, like older days (pre pre-montana).

Did anyone else notice the Bear with a torn C logo on his helmet? I think it was Benson.

  • Ian | November 5, 2006 at 3:47 pm |

Watching the Bears/Dolphins tilt, and CBS just had a close-up of Benson from Chicago — his “C” decal on his right side has been torn and it looks like the top half of the C is now a spike sticking up! No screen grab, tho…

Really, all they need to do is what so many other teams need to do — get rid of that damn black drop-shadow. Does that ever look good? EVER???

Agreed. A lot of people thought the addition of black was a great thing. I disagree. There was nothing wrong with the old look and adding black is usually never a good thing.

Try eBay. I’m not sure what they do with the shirts, exactly, but eBay would probably be your best bet.

  • Minna H | November 5, 2006 at 8:10 pm |

So. I got to see the falling ‘C’ on Cedric Benson’s helmet. I got to see the Vikes wearing their least-offensive unis (all white with random purple striping). I got to see the ‘Niners old-timey unis. I got to see the impressive Ed Hochuli ripple underneath those ridiculous windbreaker unis the refs wore today. I got to see *sigh* Troy Polamalu and his flowing locks of hair. This is all good.

Do you know what I did not get to see today? The team for whom I was rooting get a win. That pretty much wipes out the aforementioned pleasures in one fell swoop, proving that a win triumphs aesthetic beauty (or, in the case of the falling C, aeshetic folly) every time.

You know what is worse than slimy political ads during the game? Christmas ads during the game. Ahhhhh! And they start earlier and earlier each year. Before you know it, they will be on all-year round. I don’t know how I can like the Wild! uniform when I hate Christmas so much, but I do. If I never saw another Christmas ad, it would be too soon.

I realize I’m running the risk of sounding a little “swishy” here (not that there’s anything wrong with that), but I prefer the new 49ers unis, if for no other reason that they do a better job of masking the ass sweat than the “throwbacks”.

But when (I think nolan?) wanted to wear a suit on the sidelines the NFL freaked out about it not being “Official NFL Sideline Equipment.”

So, yes, it’s a Nike funded promotion. No, it’s not a gimmick. I think Lance is the largest benefactor to cancer research maybe in history. After having worked for Nike, I’m sure a portion of the 10/2 sales go to his foundation.

I knew you weren’t all bad, Miss Scrooge. I just found it odd that a team was wearing white at home without some sort of announcement. And don’t hate Christmas… you never know what you could get if you wish hard enough and have been a good girl. ;o)

    Minna’s wish!
Ah, Mr. Cratchit. If I got that for Christmas (not the best pic, but love how you doctored it), I would be the happest Scrooge in the world. In fact, I would put on a pink jersey, call myself a girl, and root for the Packers all while skipping through every store at the Megamall singing Christmas carols if I got Troy in my stockings this Christmas.

But, you see, Mr. Cratchit, wishes don’t come true, and I could never be good enough to merit this:

    Yum

Thanks for the huge laugh, though. You know my weakness too well.

sportability, I suppose I should be gentle on them because they are high school kids, but, um, wow. Those are really ugly unis. It is like the perfect storm of ugliness.

What the hell is up with those white strips down the crotch area? Are those their belts hanging down? I certainly hope so because the alternative is horrifying.

Any of you black-haters like the 49ers’ throwbacks from 1994? Rutgers also wore this exact jersey immediately after that; I think it’s one of the best looks in football.

The white jersey is expecially cleaner-looking than what they’ve got now. Ditch the gold, revive the black!

Joey Harrington was the only Dolphin I saw with his aqua sleeve stripe showing. Photo here

And it wasn’t just linemen with their sleeves all cropped and sewn up. WRs here.
Maybe if they sew a giant NFL logo and a giant rbk logo on the back of a suit coat and give it some funny striping…and make it shiney like the refs new outfits the NFL will like it?
I’m pretty sure you could somehow, somehow, tastefully throw a Reebock logo and an NFL league crest onto a suit jacket.

This black-hating is getting absolutely ridiculous. I’m a huge Niner fan and while the period unis today where great and very, very classic, the black undertones on the logo today DOES NOT look that bad. My gosh, you’d think black was like a swastika or something the way y’all talk about the color.
AMEN
Actually, I’m not so much anti-black as I am anti-drop-shadow. I don’t really care what color drop-shadow it is, I don’t think it looks good. Now, putting a secondary color as trim around numbers or letters is OK, but adding another color (which usually happens to be black), to attempt a 3-D effect, looks gawd-awful. “Of course, that’s just my opinion … I could be wrong.”
I like the Titans’ all white look.
The 49ers need to ditch their current uniforms and go back to the basics.

Current uni is way too busy.

Their real uniform is classic. Maybe have thinner pant stripes, like older days (pre pre-montana).
No, their current uniforms are fine. Obviously their old uniforms are classics.

Going back to old uniforms permanently is not always cool. The Jets come to mind.

Agreed. A lot of people thought the addition of black was a great thing. I disagree. There was nothing wrong with the old look and adding black is usually never a good thing.
I really like the current Niners uniforms.

    Nothing is wrong with them.

Yeah! The black was part of the Niners’ color scheme in the Kezar days.
